クライストチャーチは、ニュージーランド南島中部、カンタベリー平野の東端に位置し、北には北カンタベリー最大の川であるワイマカリリ川が流れる。東側は太平洋に接する。
人口は、38万人。ニュージーランド内で2番目、南島では最大。
クライストチャーチという名は、1848年に設立された移民団組織カンタベリー協会を率いたアイルランド出身の政治家ジョン・ロバート・ゴドリーの出身校であるイギリスオックスフォード大学クライストチャーチ・カレッジに由来する。1848年3月27日に開かれたカンタベリー協会初会合にて承認され市名として採用された。
1856年7月31日に英国国王の勅許状によりクライストチャーチは、ニュージーランドで最も古い市として誕生する。
イングランド人建築家のベンジャミン・マウントフォート設計によるネオ・ゴシック建築の建物が市内中心部に建造される。
緑溢れる街並みは“イングランド以外で最もイングランドらしい街”と称される。市内には740を超える公園が設置され緑豊かな街並から「ガーデンシティ（庭の街）」とも呼ばれる。
私が、クライストチャーチから帰国した、なんと１週間後の9月4日、この街を、マグニチュード7の地震が襲った。
Christchurch lies in Canterbury, near the centre of the east coast of the South Island, east of the Canterbury Plains. To the north the city is bounded by the braided Waimakariri River.
Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the country's second-largest urban area.
The city was named by the Canterbury Association, which settled the surrounding province of Canterbury. The name of Christchurch was agreed on at the first meeting of the association on 27 March 1848. It was suggested by John Robert Godley, who had attended Christ Church, Oxford. Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand.
Many of the city's Gothic Revival buildings by architect Benjamin Mountfort date from this period.
The river that flows through the centre of the city was named Avon at the request of the pioneering Deans brothers to commemorate the Scottish Avon.
On 4 September 2010, just a week after I left the city, a major 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch at 4:35 am local time!
