さて、あのオペラ界の大御所、キリ・テ・カナワとともに、日本で最もお馴染みのニュージーランド出身のアーティストといえば、やはり、「ヘイリー」であろう。
ヘイリー（ヘイリー・ウェステンラ）は、1987年、クライストチャーチに生まれた。
彼女の才能を見出した小学校の音楽教師に薦められ、6歳からバイオリンを始めた。11歳の頃には、すでに40ものミュージカルの舞台に出演、2000年に作ったデモ・アルバムが注目され、僅か13才で、ユニバーサル・ミュージック・ニュージーランドと契約するに至る。
デビュー作『Hayley Westenra』は、ニュージーランドのポップ・チャートで4週連続1位に輝き、世界的テノール歌手ラッセル・ワトソンとの共演を経て、遂に世界的に有名なクラシックレーベルのデッカ・レコード（イギリス）と契約を果たした。デッカは、故ルチアーノ・パバロッティ、アンドレア・ボチェッリ、ラッセル・ワトソンそしてあの ‘デイム’キリ・テ・カナワも所属した名門レーベルである！
2003年、世界デビュー作となった『ピュア』は、ビートルズのプロデューサーの息子、ジャイルス・マーティンがプロデュース。クラシックの楽曲やポップス、マオリの伝承歌のほかにジョージ・マーティンの書き下ろし曲などを収録したこのアルバムはイギリスのクラシック・チャートでトップ、総合チャートで７位になり、国際的な累計売上は200万枚に達した。
日本では、2003年フジテレビ開局45周年記念ドラマ「白い巨塔」（唐沢寿明、江口洋介主演）の主題歌に、
『アメイジング・グレイス』（Amazing Grace）が起用されたことで広くその名を知られるようになった。
オペラのソプラノを基本としながらも、祖父母から受け継いだケルト音楽が反映された透明感に溢れた歌声を響かせている。

Hayley has been known among Japanese since her ‘Amazing Grace’ was used as the ending song for the Japanese drama series ‘Shiroi Kyoto’(2003-2004 version).
Hayley Westenra was born on April 10, 1987, in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Hayley began her musical career at the early age of six when she starred in her school's Christmas play and impressed audiences with her singing part.
After taking music lessons, she performed in more than 40 stage productions by the time she was 11.
She made her professional recording studio debut at age 13 with Walking in the Air, an independently produced demo made for family and friends. At the age of 14 she made a self-titled collection, ‘Hayley Westenra’ (2001), that took her country by storm.
Although her albums were quite successful in New Zealand, she was unknown worldwide until she landed a contract with Decca Records and recorded ‘Pure’ a CD of classical, light pop and traditional Maori songs.
She achieved international stardom at age 16 and her international debut album Pure became No. 1 classical hit in such countries as the UK, Australia and Hong Kong.
