“Te Papa” の空を飛ぶ (37) - The Southern Alps

クイーンズタウンへ向かう機窓からは、真っ白な雪を纏った雄大なサザンアルプスとともに、テカポ、プカキ、 オハウ湖などの美しい湖の数々を眺めることができる。

これらの湖は、氷河の後退により溶けた水が、モレーン（氷河末端の堆石）にせき止められてできた氷河湖である。

“ターコイズ・ブルー（turquoise blue）”とか“ミルキー・ブルー”などと言われるこれらの湖の独特の色合いは、氷河によって削り取られた氷河粉（氷河からの極度に細かく砕かれた岩粉）によって作り出されたものといわれる。



Lakes Pukaki, Tekapo and Ohau are the three roughly parallel alpine lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand's South Island.

All three lakes were created when the terminal moraines of receding glaciers blocked their respective valleys, forming moraine-dammed lakes.

The glacial feed to the lakes gives them a distinctive blue color, created by glacial flour, the extremely finely ground rock particles from the glaciers.

サザンアルプスに聳える、通称“マウント・クック”は、ニュージーランドの最高峰。標高3,754m。High Peak, Middle Peak, Low Peakの三つのピークからなり、北から南にかけて約1.5ｋｍにも及ぶ。正式名称は、「アオラキ/マウントクック（Aoraki/Mount Cook）」。

“アオラキ（Aoraki）”は、先住民族のマオリ・ナイ・タフ族（Kāi Tahu）の言葉であるマオリ語で「雲の峰」という意味である。
“クック”は1851年ニュージーランドを探索したイギリスの海軍士官ジェームズ・クックの名にちなんで命名された。

その南にあるニュージーランド最長のタスマン氷河などとともに1953年以来「クック山国立公園」を構成。「クック山国立公園」はニュージーランド南西の他の3つの国立公園、ウェストランド、アスパイアリング山、フィヨルドランドとあわせて「テ・ワヒポウナム」（マオリ語でグリーンストーン・緑の翡翠が取れる場所という意味）と総称され、90年に世界自然遺産にも登録されている。




Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching a height of 3,754m . It lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island.

Aoraki / Mount Cook consists of three summits lying slightly south and east of the main divide, the Low Peak, Middle Peak and High Peak, with the Tasman Glacier to the east and the Hooker Glacier to the west.

Aoraki is the name of a person in the traditions of the Ngāi Tahu iwi; an early name for the South Island is Te Waka o Aoraki (Aoraki's Canoe). In the past many believed it meant "Cloud Piercer", a romantic rendering of the name's components: ao (world, daytime, cloud, etc) and raki or rangi (day, sky, weather, etc). Historically, the Māori name has been spelt Aorangi, using the standard Māori form.

While the mountain was known to Māori centuries before, the first European known to see Aoraki / Mount Cook was Abel Tasman, on December 13, 1642 during his first Pacific voyage.
The English name of Mount Cook was given to the mountain in 1851 by Captain John Lort Stokes to honor Captain James Cook who first surveyed and circumnavigated the islands of New Zealand in 1770. Captain Cook did not sight the mountain during his exploration.

The mountain is in the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, which was gazetted in 1953 and along with Westland National Park, Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park forms one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

実写による映画化が不可能といわれていたファンタジー小説を見事に映像化し大成功を収めた映画『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』３部作だが、完結編の『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/王の帰還』が公開されてからすでに７年が経つ。

かねてから噂されていた『ホビット（The Hobbit）』が、ピーター・ジャクソン監督のもと、2011年2月に、クランクインすることが、正式に発表された。

『ホビット』は、『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』のプリクエル（前章）にあたるJ・R・R・トールキン原作『ホビットの冒険』を2部作として映画化するものである。

制作会社ワーナー・ブラザーズとの合意により、撮影は当初の計画通りニュージーランド国内で行われる。





さて、搭乗機は、映画『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』に頻繁に登場した、壮大なサザンアルプスとターコイズ・ブルーの水をたたえる氷河湖を見ながら、南島のリゾート地、クイーンズタウンへ向け飛行を続ける。

サザンアルプスは、ニュージーランド南島の南西部から北東部に走る山岳地帯で、中心部には、ニュージーランド一の高さを誇るマウント・クックを含む鋭く険しい山が連なる。

“May It Be”は、映画『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/旅の仲間』のエンディングで流れる ケルト調の独特の美しさをもつ曲である。

アイルランド人のエンヤは、昔からこの『指輪物語』のファンで、祖父からケルトの神話や伝承物語を聴いて育ったために、妖精物語への関心が深く、映画製作の話があった時にすぐ引き受けてこの曲を製作したという。

この曲の歌詞の一部には、“エルフ語”という架空の言語が使用されている。

“Mornië utúlië”　（闇が来る） “Mornië alan tië”　（闇が降る）

このエルフ語は、『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』の生みの親である英国人作家トールキンが編み出した造語である（劇中でエルフ族が使っていた）。

“MayIt Be”の作詞を手がけたエンヤのパートナー、ローマ・ライアンが、このメロディーにマッチする美しい響きをもった言語を模索し、そしてこれを意識的に挿入したのであろう。





In 2001, Enya, a Irish singer, along with producer/arranger Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, recorded "May It Be", which was featured in the first installment of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Fellowship of the Ring.

Enya’s grandfather told her mythological tales as a child, which drew her to The Lord of the Rings. After rereading the book many times, Enya deems it her all time favorite book.

The lyrics of this theme song include English words, and words in Elvish language, Quenya. Quenya is a fictional language invented by author J.R.R. Tolkien for this classic novels.

Two lines in May It Be contain phrases written in Quenya. The first, “Mornië utúlië,” translates to “Darkness has come.” “Mornië alan tië” means “Darkness has fallen.”

Each line repeats twice in the song. The remaining song lyrics are written in English. They are intermingled with the Quenya lyrics, as in the second stanza; “Mornië utúlië, Believe and you will find your way, Mornië alantië, A promise lives within you now.

映画『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』三部作は、高度なコンピューター・グラフィックスと現実の風景を見事に織り交ぜて、アカデミー賞をはじめとする数々の賞を獲得した。
そのシーンの大半が、ニュージーランドで撮影されたものだと知って驚いた。

作品中に登場する冒険シーンや、暗黒世界の夢とも現実ともつかないような不思議な世界を表現するための風景や雄大な土地を求めて、監督らは、撮影開始1年以上も前から、ニュージーランドの北島及び南島各所をロケハンしたという。

私が、この映画の背景になったニュージーランドの壮大な自然に感銘を受けたのは言うまでもないが、最も印象に残ったのが、第一作『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/ 旅の仲間』のエンディングでクレジットとともに流れる『May It Be』という曲の美しさであった。

“エンヤ”が、作詞・作曲を手がけた書き下ろし作品で、映画のイメージに合わせて「旅人の無事を願う祈り」がしっとりと詠われている。

この曲が流れると、映画のシーンが、次から次へと感動的に蘇ってくるのだ。







The trilogy received wide praise for the good combination of digital special effects and real sceneries of nature.

I was a little surprised to learn all three films were conducted in various locations within New Zealand's conservation areas and national parks.


Moreover, it was by the ending song“May It Be”that I was moved most after having seen the film:"the Fellowship of the Ring".

This song reminds me of a seriese of scenes of the quest.

It's such a beautiful song!

様々な種族が共存する「中つ国」のホビット村に暮らす青年、フロド（イライジャ・ウッド）は、ある日、叔父ビルボ・バギンズから一つの指輪を譲り受ける。

その指輪は、永いあいだ失われていた、古代の冥王サウロンを蘇らせる悪しき魔力を宿した指輪だった。
指輪の出現に、冥王と暗黒の国モルドールが目覚め、指輪は邪悪な者達の心を再び惹きつけはじめた。

サウロン復活を阻止する手段はただ一つ、指輪をサウロンの懐・モルドールの「滅びの山」の火口に捨てなければならない。

フロドと、彼らを守る“旅の仲間”、人間のアラゴルン、ボロミア、エルフ族のレゴラス、ドワーフ族のギムリ、ホビット族のサム、メリー、ピピン、そして魔法使いのガンダルフは、指輪を葬るべく、モルドールの国を目指す。

２００１年、ニュージーランド出身のピーター・ジャクソン（Peter Jackson）による、映画『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/旅の仲間』（The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring）が公開された。

ピーター・ジャクソン監督は、撮影のほとんどを、ニュージーランドで行い、壮大な映像表現によって、この３部作を完成させた。

そして、２００４年には、完結編である『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/王の帰還』が、アカデミー賞トップタイ（『ベンハー』、『タイタニック』と並ぶ）の11部門を受賞。彼も、アカデミー監督賞とアカデミー脚色賞を受賞した。





The first film in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, released in 2001.

The films were directed by Peter Jackson.
The entire project took eight years, with the filming for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in Jackson's native New Zealand.


The trilogy was a great financial success.
The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30 Academy Awards nominated in total.

The final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King, won all 11 of the Academy Awards for which it was nominated, tying it with Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Academy Awards received for a film. The trilogy received wide praise for the cast and for the innovative practical and digital special effects.

『指輪物語』（The Lord of the Rings）は、イギリスの古代中世英語の教授で言語学者のJ.R.R.トールキンによって執筆され、1954年から1955年にかけて、「旅の仲間（The Fellowship Of The Ring)」「二つの塔(The Two Towers)」「王の帰還(The Return Of The King)」の三部に分けて発表されたもので、1937年に出版された「ホビットの冒険(The Hobbit)」の続編に当たる。

その後、多くの言語に翻訳され、20世紀文学で最もポピュラーなファンタジー作品の一つになった。


“中つ国（Middle-Earth）”と言う架空の世界を舞台に、ホビット族を中心に、魔法使い、エルフ、ドワーフ、オーク、そして人間といった様々な種族が活躍する物語で、現代のあらゆるファンタジーの原点と言われている。




The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy novel written by philologist and University of Oxford professor J. R. R. Tolkien.
The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work.

'The Lord of the Rings' was published as three separate volumes over the course of a year in 1954–55.
The three volumes were entitled 'The Fellowship of the Ring''The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'.

The Lord of the Rings has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages, becoming one of the most popular and influential works in the field of 20th-century fantasy literature.

「その指輪を捨てなければ、この世は闇となる・・・ 」


遠い遠い昔、闇の冥王サウロンは密かに、世界を滅ぼす魔力を秘めた“ひとつの指輪”を作り出した。

サウロンは自らの残忍さ、邪悪さ、そして生きるものすべてを支配したいという欲望を、この指輪に注ぎ込んだのだ。

やがて中つ国（ミドル・アース）の自由な地は、指輪の力をふるうサウロンの手に落ちていった。

激しい戦火の中 勇気ある者たちがサウロンの支配に次々と立ち向かい、
ひとりの勇者、イシルドゥアが、サウロンの指を切り落とすことに成功した。
サウロンが敗れたのだ。
しかしイシルドゥアは指輪を破壊せず自らのものとし、悪を永久に滅ぼす唯一の機会を失った。

そして指輪はイシルドゥアを裏切り、死に追いやる。

In the Second Age of Middle-earth, the One Ring is forged by the Dark Lord Sauron in order to conquer the lands of Middle-earth.

A Last Alliance of Elves and Men is formed to counter Sauron and during a battle on the foot of Mount Doom, Prince Isildur, son of King Elendil, who is slain by Sauron in the battle, picks up his father's broken sword and slashes at Sauron's hand, separating him from the Ring and vanquishing his army.

However, due to Sauron's "life force" being bound to the Ring, the Dark Lord is not completely defeated unless the Ring itself is destroyed, but Isildur, corrupted by the Ring's power, refuses to do so.
Sometime later, Isildur is ambushed and killed by Orcs and the Ring is lost in a river.

Thousands of years later, the Ring is claimed by the Hobbit Sméagol causing him to obsess over it.
Finally, the Ring abandons Sméagol, who has turned into the creature Gollum under the influence of the Ring, and is found by Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit from the Shire.

サザンアルプスから流れ出したワイマカリリ川は、蛇行を繰り返し、カンタベリー大平原を潤す。

しかし、雪が解け、谷に大雨が降ると、氾濫が起こすのだ。
ワイマカリリ川から溢れだした洪水は、1865年、1866年、1868年、クライストチャーチの街を襲った。

ひとたび、氾濫すれば、すべてを飲み込み、流し尽くす魔の川。
カンタベリーで、これ以上に恐ろしい川はない。



The Waimakaririr River wanders out from the high alps.
It waters the broad Canterbury Plains

However, it ‘s subject to sudden floods when the snows melt or there are heavy rains in the mountain valleys.

Breakouts of floodwaters from the Waimakariri River caused damage to Christchurch in December 1865, October 1866 and February 1868.　

The Waimakariri River still threatens more people and properties than any other New Zealand river.

カンタベリー平原を流れる大河、ワイマカリリ川。

サザンアルプス、アーサーズパス国立公園の山々の頂を源流とし、南東の方角へ約150Kmにわたり蛇行しながら流れ、クライストチャーチの北、約20kmにあるカイアポイの町の近くで、太平洋へと注いでいる。


“ワイマカリリ”は、「奔流する冷たい川」を意味するマオリ語だ。





The Waimakariri River is a river in Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand.


The river rises on the eastern flanks of the Southern Alps, eight kilometres southwest of Arthur's Pass.
It flows for 150 kilometers in a generally southeastward direction from the Southern Alps across the Canterbury Plains.

It finally enters the Pacific north of Christchurch, near the town of Kaiapoi.

In Māori, Waimakariri has several meanings, one of which is “river of cold rushing water”
