“ニュージーランド”といえば、まず、最初に思い浮かぶのが、羊。
ニュージーランドは、国全体で、約4,000万頭の羊が飼われているといわれる。
特に、南島のクライストチャーチを中心とする、カンタベリー平野一帯では、此処彼処で、牧草を食む羊の群れを上空から眺めることができた。
ニュージーランドの人口が400万人強なので、人間の１0倍の羊がいることになる。
文字通り「羊の国」である。
羊を最初にニュージーランドに持込んだのが、イギリスの探検家キャプテン・ジェームズ・クックであったと言われる。
1769年、船で持ち込まれたが、ニュージーランドの環境に適応できずに、生き残ることができなかった。
その後、丈夫なメリノ種がオーストラリアで定着し、ニュージーランドに羊の群れが上陸したのは1834年のことであった。
19世紀半ばから羊の数が急激に増え、羊毛産業はニュージーランドの基幹産業の一つになった。
