"よく耳にする gotta と hafta と outta をみてみよう。"


こないだ、Twitterで「outtaって何？」って聞かれた。何かったら、「out of」を口語では、「アウタ」みたいに縮めて（というか崩して）発音することがあって、それを発音どおりに表記すると、「outta」あと「outa」になる。

こういう短縮された発音は日常会話では頻繁に使われるし、映画や音楽でもよく登場するから、知ってた方がリスニングに有利だ。

この手の短縮表現は「outta」のほかにもたくさんあるから、ちょっとみてみよう！

ちょっとね、Wikipediaさんの、「Relaxed Pronunciation」という項目に美しくまとめられているから、それをもとに解説させてもらうね。

ちなみに、“relaxed pronunciation”はもちろん「リラックスした発音」ということで、wikipediaの説明によると、“slurring of syllables of common words”。訳すと、「頻繁に使われる言葉の音の区切りを不明瞭につなげて言う」って意味になる。

“slur”「早口で不明瞭に言う」
“syllable”「音節」、つまり音の区切りね。

「お・は・よ・う・ご・ざ・い・ま・す」と音節を明瞭に発音せずに、アラヤマさんは、「おざーす！」、「あざーす！」と崩す。日本語でもこのパターンはいくらでもあるね。これと、同じことだ。

このタイプの短縮発音

じゃ、ご存知の、

gonna : ['ɡʌnə] = going to「ゴナ」みたいに発音。
wanna : ['wɑnə] = want to「ワナ」みたいに発音。

“I’m gonna do it.” “I wanna do it.” は定番だ。“do it”の部分を変えるだけいくらでも使いまわせる。

ちなみに“wannabe”（ワナビーみたく発音）は「有名人に憧れている子」のことで、80年代アメリカでは“Maddona wannabe”であふれていたそうな。日本でも、「アムラー」ってあったね。そういう感じ。あとスパイス・ガールズの「Wannabe」って曲あった。

gotta : ['ɡɑɾə] = got to「ガラ」みたいに発音。
hafta : ['hæftə] = have to 「ハフタ」みたいに発音。
oughta : ['ɔ:tə] = ought to「オータ」みたいに発音。

この３つは、ぜんぶ「～しなくちゃいけない」みたいな意味だからまとめて憶える。“must”はかなり強い表現だから、“gotta”や“hafta”のほうが使いやすいね。"outa" はべきだもんね.といったカンジもあってほかの2つよりちょっと強いかな。

“I gotta go now.”「もういかなくちゃ。」 “You hafta do your homework.”「宿題しなさいよ。」

“have got a ~” も “gotta” になる

それで、ちょっとややっこしくなるけど、
“gotta” は “have got a” の略でもある。

例えば、
“Have you got a cigarette?”「たばこもってる？」は“Gotta cigarette?”とも言える。

ここで、何で“Do you have a cigarette?”じゃなく、わざわざ“Have you got”と完了形で言うのん？と思うかもしれない。文法的には、家でgetしたタバコを今も持ってるから、過去から現在までの継続性を表す完了形なんだ、とか言えるけど、じゃ、Do you have との違いは？って聞かれたって、それは知らないね。

慣用的にみんながそう使ってんの！としか言えない。

「～もってる？」って聞くときに、“Have you got~?”とか“Gotta~?”と言うんだな、と覚えておこう。

「今夜はイイ夜になる気がするんだぜー。」

“Gotta time?” と “Got the time?” の違い

ついでなんで、
“Gotta time?” と “Got the time?”の違いも見ておこう。

Gotta time? : これは今までのながれどおり、“Have you got a time?”の略で、「ちょっと時間ある？」みたいなかんじ。話しかけるときにつかうフレーズ。もちろん、“Have you got a time?”と言っても、“Do you have a time?” と言ってもいい。

Got the time? : 「a time」が「the time」になると、この場合、「時刻」の意味になる。ということは、“Got the time?” は「今、何時？」とか「時計持ってる？」みたいな意味だ。つまり、“What time is it?” と同んなじ意味。
