My Speech delivered at Niimi International Exchange Association's Get-together(December 16, 2014)

I was asked to deliver the opening speech for Niimi International Exchange Association's Get-together (Niimi English Salon #244) today(December 16, 2014).

I know I am not a good speaker, plus I always try to speak without reading a script, so this is what I tried to speak:


Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and boys and girls.

My name is Kiyoshi Yamauchi, I’m Professor of English at Niimi College, and one of the executives of Niimi International Exchange Association.

First of all, I’d like to thank all the people present at the party this evening on behalf of Niimi International Exchange Association.

Actually this party has five meanings just like my favorite author and Nobel Prize winning American Novelist, John Steinbeck told that his literary works have five layers, which mean, five meanings.

The first meaning of tonight party is to get to know Niimi’s proud Assistant Language Teachers, who have chances to come all the way to Niimi from their distant home, and are very supportive to English and International Education in Niimi School system. Thank you, ALTs!

The second meaning of this party is a congratulatory party to the all the attendees of Niimi International Exchange Association’s English Lessons. Congratulations, the attendees!

Thirdly, this is a Christmas Party, which is not a religious Christmas party, but the one where we can get together and have fun. So, merry Christmas, everyone!

And the fourth one is that this is what we call “Forget-the-year-party.” It is sometimes difficult to explain what “忘年会” is like in English, but I think this is the party to forget your bad things in the old year, and try to renew yourself for the coming new year.

And the fifth, the last but not the least meaning is to get to know, reunite, and find new friendship with each other. Because every member of this society is very busy and it is sometimes difficult to make time to get together. So this is a great opportunity for your friendship and companionship.

Today we have an honorable guest, Dr. Masayoshi Namba, President of Niimi College and Consultant to this Association.

He always advise us faculty members that our speech should be concise, precise and short.

Therefore I am going to stop here.

まなび愛のまち新見プロジェクト「えいごでクリスマス」(正田公民館)(2014年12月13日)

2014年12月13日(土)、昨年度に引き続き依頼を受けた正田公民館の「えいごでクリスマス」に幼児教育学科2年生の英語コミュニケーションⅡを選択している学生たちの有志と参加させていただきました。
(昨年度のものについては、幼児教育学科英語コミュニケーションⅡ「えいごでクリスマス」参加を参照ください。)

これは、新見市教育委員会が推進している「まなび愛のまち新見」プロジェクトの一環です。

このプロジェクトは、学校や園の外の人たちの力を活用し教育に取り入れることにより、双方向の学び合い(まなび愛)が生まれるというコンセプトで行われています。

幼児教育学科の学生たちにとっては、幼稚園の子どもたち(今回の場合は、明新・井倉・草間台の３園)に英語の楽しさを教えながら、自分たちも実践を通じ、またその準備や練習を通じて学ぶものが大きいと考え、幼児教育学科の英語コミュニケーションⅡの授業の一環として参加させてもらっています。

授業の中で、演目を学生たちと話し合い、練習を行い、本番のために準備しました。

今年は、夏に大佐こども園での「えいごであそぼう」の依頼も受けましたので、その内容を元にプログラムを組み立てました。

僕は、プログラムを考え、どの学生をどのように活かしていくかを考えますが、その中で、つんくさんがモーニング娘。を、秋元康さんがAKB48をプロデュースする気分を少しだけ味わうことができます(もちろん、私には歌も踊りも指導する力はありませんが…。)

今回の活動のプログラムは、今度の土曜日に別の場所で開催の「えいごでクリスマス」でも共通して使いますので、まだここに披露はしませんが、子どもたちも親御さんたちも楽しんでくれたようで、また演じた学生たちも楽しそうでしたので、大成功だったと思います。

子どもたちの顔が写っていたり、学生たちが名前入りのエプロンを着用しているため活動中の写真はアップできませんが、これが活動が終わって撮影した記念写真です。



今回は新見市のALTであるカナダ出身のニコールさんの協力も得ました。

そして幼児教育学科の斎藤先生にも送迎や写真撮影等でお世話になりました。

また、このような会は出会いや再会の機会でもあります。

今回参加したある学生のお母様も本学幼児教育学科の卒業生なのですが、その学生が、お母様の幼児教育学科時代の同級生の先生と出会っているシーンを目にしました。

また、斎藤先生と私の教え子でもある卒業生がお母さんになって、今回の会に参加してくれていたりもしました。

この「まなび愛のまち新見」プロジェクトが今後どのくらい継続されるのかわかりませんが、もし長年続けられ、我々もずっと協力させてもらえるようであれば、ここで出会った子どもたちが将来、本学の幼児教育学科に入学し、このプロジェクトに参加するなんてことも将来起こるかもしれません。
