Kristín Atladóttir has requested that the Icelandic government pardon Halldóra Jónsdóttir, wrongfully sentenced to death in the 18th century for incest and infanticide after being raped by her father. RÚV reports that the Ministry of Justice is considering the case.

Wrongfully sentenced
Halldóra Jónsdóttir was born at Þórarinsstaðir farm in Seyðisfjörður, East Iceland in the year 1700. She was sentenced to death for incest and infanticide after her father confessed to having raped her and to killing the child which was a result of the act. Halldóra was nevertheless sentenced to death for not having denounced her father. The sentence was carried out in Fljótsdalur valley, where she was drowned in Bessastaðaá river.

Kristín Atladóttir wrote a letter to the President and Prime Minister of Iceland requesting that Halldóra be pardoned and the Icelandic government formally acknowledge the injustice of the case. “I wanted in some way to move the progress and legal opportunities we have today back into the past. And I wanted to lift her name out of oblivion and make her a symbol for all the women who were killed in this way.” Kristín stated. Kristín also hopes to raise a monument by the river in memory of Halldóra and all women in Iceland who shared her fate.

No legal precedent
The Ministry of Justice is now considering Halldóra’s case. Law Professor Björg Thorarensen says no legal process exists in Iceland for pardoning those who were wrongfully sentenced centuries ago. She states, however, that nothing stands in the way of the government issuing a formal and symbolic apology.
