〇 極悪パンダ!

パンダがあるレストランに入って、サンドイッチを注文しました。食べ終わると銃を取り出し、店員を射殺して去ろうとします。怒り心頭の店長が怒鳴ります。「人殺ししてまで食い逃げとはどうゆうこった!」

すると、パンダはやおら傍らの辞書をひらき 「パンダ」の項目を示しました。
それにはこう書いてありました。

Panda : A treeーdwelling mammal of Asian origin,characterized by distinct black and white coloring.
Eats,shoots and leaves.
(パンダ : アジアでみられ、木に住む哺乳類。白黒の独特な色。食べて、撃って、去る)

これは、この”Eats,shoots and leaves”の部分に誤植があったんですね。誤植とは、余分なコンマがあったのです。
正しくは、”Eats shoots and leaves”なのです。
つまり、コンマがあると3語とも動詞で、レストランで起きたように 「食べて、撃って、去る」の意味になりますね。
だけど、”Eats shoots and leaves”ではshoots も leaves も名詞で eats の目的語になります。 「(パンダは)新芽や葉っぱを食べる」

「コンマ」１つが極悪パンダを作っちゃうんですね～

Between 2 and 8% of us have symptoms of a compulsive shopping disorder.Symptoms include buying unnecessary items.Researchers at Indiana Univ.say ”Shopaholics,when they are feeling out of sorts,shop for a pickーmeーup.They go out and buy to get a high.”Although some question its status as an illness,Lorrin Kolan,a prof.of psychiatry at Stanford Univ,says it is a genuine dirorder.One shopper in his study amassed 2,000 wrenchs for no apparent reason.

［Treatment］
Sityーthree per cent of ppl who took da drug citalopram for seven weeks in a small trial at Stanford Univ experienced a 50% or greater reduction in symptoms.The drug is an antidepressant which increases levels in da brain of serotonin.

《ROAD RAGE》
Intermittent explosive disorder,including some cases of road rage,is believed to affect 7.3% of ppl.The main symtoms are failure to resist aggressive impulses.resulting assaults or damage to property.

［Treatment］
Angerーmanagement programmes and counselling have been da main treatments but a few trials,sponsored by da US Natl Institute of Mental Health,is looking at da use of two antideressant,fluoxetine and divalproex,in 144 men and woman.
Researchers say dat da disorder is defined and effective treatments have not been found,but dat serotonin,a chemical dat helps to regulate mood and emotions,may play a role.

Gambling is one of scores of behaviours,traits and habits dat are being regarded as treatable illnesses.
Soon u may be able to cure worst habits with a pill.

Road rage,kleptmania,sex addiction,drinking,teenage tantrums and domestic violence are all being treated with drugs.


With more than 1,000 trials under way worldwide on therapies for behavioural problems,there is growing concern about this process of ”medicalisation”.
Derek Summerfield,a British psychiatrist,has questioned da number of ppl being treated for such traits.
He believes dat postーtraumatic stress disorder exemplifies a growing obsession with with turning emotions into comditions.
