「低放射線被ばくで深刻な健康被害」仏米科学者が学術誌に発表／サイエンス・デイリー（11/13/2012）
「たとえ非常に低い放射線レベルでの被ばくであっても、生命体には有害な影響がある」
米サウス・キャロライナ大学のティモシー・ムソ―教授（生物科学）と仏パリ南大学のアンダース・ミュラー教授（動物生理学）らは11月8日、過去40年間に出版された5千以上の関連論文を分析した結果、放射線被ばくに関しては「安全レベル」に該当する「しきい値」は存在せず、低放射線による被ばくであっても、免疫機能、生理機能、染色体における突然変異、疾病の発生率等において統計上有意な確度で有害な影響が引き起こされと指摘、『生物学レビュー』（Biological Reviews）に発表した。

今回の調査は、天然の放射線量が比較的高いイランのラムサール、ケニアのモンバサ、フランス南部のロデーヴ、中国の陽江等で個別に実施された放射線被ばくの影響調査に関する結果を集め、「メタ分析」（過去に行われた複数の研究結果を統合し、より信頼性の高い結果を得るための分析手法）を実施したもの。個々の調査では放射能被ばくによる染色体の損壊、ダウン症を含む疾病の発生率、男女の出生比率等への影響などが分析されている。
「天然の放射線量が高いこれらの地域では、『被ばくによる影響が明らかに目に見える形では起きていない』とか、『影響があったとしても、小さかったり被害者の集中する地域が限られている』、といった理由で、『低放射線量による被ばくの悪影響はおそらくないだろう』と考える傾向があります。」
ムソー教授はこう指摘する。
「でも、メタ分析を行えば低放射線被ばくが重要な悪影響を及ぼしていることが目に見えるようになるのです。」
「今回のデータは又、被ばくに『しきい値』など無いことを非常に明確に証明しました。そしてもっと本当のことを言えば、このように低レベルの放射線による被ばくであっても健康への悪影響が現れるのですから、被ばくを防ぐための規制を設ける際の考え方を（より厳しい方向に）変えなければならないのです。特に、原発や医療被ばく、飛行場のエックス線検査など、自然界には無い形で出された放射能によって人々が被ばくする場合には。」
