スケートの起源
スケートに関する最も古い記述としては、2世紀に作られたという
北欧伝説があります。
またスケートに関する最古の絵画としては、現在はスケートの守護
神とされている、少女リドヴィが16歳の時に氷上で起こした事故を
描いていた木版画(1498年)があります。
原始時代にスケートがどのように伝わり、普及したか詳しくわかり
ませんが、フィンランドから北欧のスカンジナビア全体に広がり、
さらに南下してオランダに伝わったというのが通説のようです。
スケートの発展
12世紀のぶんけんに、スキーのように一本づえをついてスケートを
滑走する記述がありますが、いずれにしてもオランダが中世以降の
発展に大きく貢献しました。
中世以降のオランダではあの有名な運河がすでに完成して主要都市
を網の目のように結んでいました。
冬季には寒気が厳しく、雪が少ないオランダの気候によって運河が
氷結すると、人々は冬の絶好のレジャーの場としておおいにスケート
を楽しんだといわれています。
16世紀にはオランダ軍隊の歩兵の訓練が氷上で行われたという記録も
あるように、オランダではスケート用具と滑走技術が次第に進歩しま
した。
そして、17世紀の中頃には一般の人々や商人達は、氷結した運河を
滑って町から町へ行くための交通手段にスケートを使うようになり
ました。
農民達も狩人も早く目的地に着くためにスケートを使うようになっ
て、17世紀の終わり頃にはスケートはオランダのあらゆる階層の
人々に滑られるようになり、自然に「速く滑る」ことを競うように
なって、スポーツ、すなわちスピードスケーティングとして発展する
元になったと考えられます。
いっぽう貴族階級はその階級意識から、一般の民衆とは異なった洗練
された優雅な動作で氷上を滑走する必要があったわけです。
このため、貴族達はのちにオランダ人の「ダッチ・ロール」と呼ばれる
独特の滑走スタイルを想像したのです。
きれは両腕を胸の前で組み、胸を張って片足のアウトサイド、エッジで
滑走し、、他方の足を後方に形良く伸ばして保つものでした。
それまで勝手気ままに行われていた氷上滑走姿勢に対する「型」が誕生
したののです。
そしてこれがフィギュアスケーティング発祥の種子となったのです。
