JR East said Tuesday it will carry out test runs of automated trains with passengers aboard on Tokyo's Yamanote loop line for two months starting around October.  It has been testing the automated system on out-of-service trains on the line since 2018, and the operator intends to implement the technology around 2028.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned that Japan will perish if it does not reverse its declining birthrate, responding to a tweet of Kyodo News that said the country's population saw its largest drop on record in 2021.  "Unless something changes it, Japan will eventually cease to exist." he said.
