箱根山は、神奈川県と静岡県にまたがる火山の総称である。
箱根火山は、直径約11kmのカルデラで特徴づけられる複式火山として知られており、この火山活動は今から約40万年前に始まり現在まで続いている。
標高1438メートルの最高峰をなす神山や駒ヶ岳などの中央火口丘、火口原にある仙石原、芦ノ湖、大涌谷などがあり、温泉が多い。
箱根山は古くから東海道が通り、交通の要衝であった。特に江戸時代には箱根関所が置かれ、厳しい取締りの拠点となった。
