「英語の諺に見られる人間」と題して、以下の諺を解説しながらお話ししました。
1995年4月に当時の新見女子短期大学に赴任して3年目のことでした。

A rolling stone gathers no moss.
転がる石に苔むさず
Every dog has his day.
誰にでもよい時がある
Kill two birds with one stone.
一石二鳥、一挙両得
Look before you leap.
転ばぬ先の杖、石橋を叩いて渡る
Rome was not built in a day.
ローマは一日にして成らず
Do in Rome as the Romans do./When in Rome do as the Romans do.
郷に入っては郷に従え
All roads lead to Rome.
全ての道はローマに通じる、目的達成の方法は色々ある
Seeing is believing.
百聞は一見にしかず
See Naples and die.
日光を見ないうちは結構と言うな
Slow and steady wins the race./More haste, less speed.
急がば回れ
Speech is silver, silence is golden.
弁舌は銀、沈黙は金
All that glitters is not gold.
輝くもの全て金ならず
Strike the iron while it is hot./Make hay while the sun shines.
好機逸すべからず
Honesty is the best policy.
正直は最善の策

God helps those who help themselves.
