曲は伝統的なｺﾞｽﾍﾟﾙ・ﾌﾞﾙｰｽ・ｿﾝｸﾞです。1930年､ｺﾞｽﾍﾟﾙ音楽界の先駆的存在であり、ｷﾞﾀｰ・ｴｳﾞｧﾝｼﾞｪﾘｽﾄ（ｷﾞﾀｰ弾き語りの福音伝道師）として知られたBlind Willie Johnson（ﾌﾞﾗｲﾝﾄﾞ・ｳｨﾘｰ･ｼﾞｮﾝｿﾝ）によって最初に録音されました。 その後､1964年にBob Gibsonはｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Where I'm Bound”に同名でこの曲を収録しています。彼は1950年代から1960年代初期後期のﾌｫｰｸｿﾝｸﾞ･ﾘﾊﾞｲﾊﾞﾙに影響を与えたｼﾝｶﾞｰ・ｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾀｰでﾊﾞﾝｼﾞｮｰと12弦ｷﾞﾀｰの名手でした。1959年にはﾆｭｰﾎﾟｰﾄ・ﾌｫｰｸ・ﾌｪｽﾃｨﾊﾞﾙで､まだ、無名であったJoan Baezを紹介しました。 そして､1965年にﾘﾘｰｽ:されたPeter, Paul & Maryのｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”A Song Will Rise”､The Travelers3のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”New Sounds” に曲は収録されました。The Travelers3のﾊﾞｰｼﾞｮﾝは我々のﾚﾊﾟｰﾄﾘｰとなっています。 1972年には、米国のｼﾝｶﾞｰ､作曲家、学者であるBernice Reagon（ﾊﾞｰﾆｽ･ﾘｰｺﾞﾝ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”River of Life”に1985年にはﾉﾙｳｪｰのｼﾞｬｰﾅﾘｽﾄ､歌手､ﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝ、ﾚｺｰﾄﾞﾌﾟﾛﾃﾞｭｰｻｰの Rune Larsen （ﾙｰﾝ・ﾗｰｾﾝ) はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Flammen”に収録しています。ﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝによって全く異なった曲に聞こえます。
