The Midnight Specialとは、本来は夜行急行列車のことですが、この歌ではのﾍｯﾄﾞﾗｲﾄの光を意味します。ﾋｭｰｽﾄﾝから夜行急行列車が通り過ぎるとき、一瞬の間、the Sugar Land Prison（ｼｭｶﾞｰﾗﾝﾄﾞ刑務所）を照らすﾍｯﾄﾞﾗｲﾄの光のことです。曲は歴史的にはﾌﾞﾙｰｽ･ｽﾀｲﾙで囚人の視点から演奏され、多くのﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝがｶﾊﾞｰしています。１９２６年Dave Cutrell（ﾃﾞｲﾌﾞ･ｶｯﾄﾚﾙ）〔McGintyのｵｸﾗﾎﾏ州ｶｳﾎﾞｰｲﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞのﾒﾝﾊﾞｰ〕によってﾀｲﾄﾙＰistol Pete's Midnight Special が最初にＣＭとして記録されました。 また､Sam Collins（ｻﾑ･ｺﾘﾝｽﾞ）は、1927年にタイトルThe Midnight Special Blues商業的に曲をﾘﾘｰｽしました。。 そして､1934年にはLead Belly（ﾚｯﾄﾞﾍﾞﾘｰ）が現在の歌詞をつけて今に至っています。The Weaversは1957- 1958年､録音の音源を編集､2003年､ＣＤｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Rarities From The Vanguard Vault”､1962年､The Brothers Fourはｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Ｉn Person”､Harry Belafonteはｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”The Midnight Special”､1969年､Creedence Ｃｌｅａｒｗａｔｅｒ Ｒｅｖｉｖａｌ（ｸﾘｰﾃﾞﾝｽ・ｸﾘｱｳｫｰﾀｰ・ﾘﾊﾞｲﾊﾞﾙ）はｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Willy and the Poor Boys”に曲を収録しています。また､The Beatlesも1969年､録音の音源を編集､2000年ﾘﾘｰ17枚組ＣＤｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Thirty Days” Ｖｏｌ.１に曲を収録しています。

We Can Work It Outは、The Ｂrothers Four､1966年のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ ”A Beatles Songbook” の挿入曲です。曲は、1965年12月にThe Beatlesが発表した11枚目ｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙ･ｼﾝｸﾞﾙ曲でありﾚﾉﾝ=ﾏｯｶｰﾄﾆｰの作品です。途中で三拍子になるｱﾚﾝｼﾞはｼﾞｮｰｼﾞ･ﾊﾘｽﾝのｱｲﾃﾞｱによります。米国のBillboard（ﾋﾞﾙﾎﾞｰﾄﾞ）誌では、1966年1月8日にﾁｬｰﾄで1位を記録、同1966年年間ﾗﾝｷﾝｸﾞは第11位､ｷｬｯｼｭﾎﾞｯｸｽでは4週連続第1位を獲得し、年間ﾗﾝｷﾝｸﾞ第11位を記録しています。米国では100万枚以上のｾｰﾙｽを記録しました。そして、The Four Seasonsは1976年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ＃All This And World-War II”Roberta Flack（ﾛﾊﾞｰﾀ・ﾌﾗｯｸ）は2012年ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Let It Be Roberta"､共にThe Beatlesの曲を集めたｱﾙﾊﾞﾑをﾘﾘｰｽ、この曲を収めています・

The Lettermenは1967年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”The Lettermen!!! ..And Live!" をﾘﾘｰｽI Believeを収録しました。我々もｱｶﾍﾟﾗの曲にﾄﾗｲ､彼らをｶﾊﾞｰし、ﾚﾊﾟｰﾄﾘｰとしました。曲は､ＴＶ番組でJane Froman（ｼﾞｪｰﾝ･ﾌﾛｰﾏﾝ）によって紹介され、ＴＶで紹介された最初のﾋｯﾄ曲です。第二次 世界大戦後すぐに1952年の朝鮮戦争の蜂起に悩まされたFromanは、Ervin Drake（ｱｰｳﾞｨﾝ・ﾄﾞﾚｰｸ） Irvin Graham（ｱｰﾋﾞﾝ・ｸﾞﾚｱﾑ, Jimmy Shirl （ｼﾞﾐｰ・ｼｬｰﾙ）とAl Stillman（ｱﾙ・ｽﾃｨﾙﾏﾝ）に、民衆に希望と信仰を与える歌を作曲するよう頼み、1953年に書かれました。同年､Frankie Laineはｼﾝｸﾞﾙをﾘﾘｰｽ､英国ｼﾝｸﾞﾙｽChartで連続18週１位、米国でも３週２位を記録しました。

そして､ｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞのｳﾞｫｰｶﾙ･ﾄﾘｵ、The Bachelors(ﾊﾞﾁｪﾗｰｽﾞ）は１９６４年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ "Presenting: The Bachelors"､Elvis Presleyは１９７１年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ "You'll Never Walk Alone"に曲を収録しています。

The Brothers Fourは1970年に"Let's Get Together"に続く､ Mark Pearson(ﾏｰｸ･ﾋﾟｱｿﾝ）加入後､2枚目のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”1970”をﾘﾘｰｽしました。ﾎﾟｽﾄ･ﾌｫｰｸ･ｿﾝｸﾞを目指したｱﾙﾊﾞﾑでその中も私が最も好きな曲です。

曲はｻﾝﾌﾗﾝｼｽｺの北部、ｶﾘﾌｫﾙﾆｱ州ﾏﾘﾝ郡で活動していたｼﾝｶﾞｰ・ｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾀｰTom Brownにょって作られました。彼と彼の妻Nancy Brownが結成した夫婦ﾃﾞｭｵ・ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞRejoice（ﾘｼﾞｮｲｽ）が1968年ﾘﾘｰｽのｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Rejoice”　に収録されています。1960年代後半のﾍﾞｲｴﾘｱやﾛｻﾝｾﾞﾙｽは､反体制的なｶｳﾝﾀｰｶﾙﾁｬｰの発信基地であり､ﾋｯﾋﾟｰ的思想､ﾏﾘﾌｧﾅやLSDなどのﾄﾞﾗｯｸﾞ･ｶﾙﾁｬｰにより、全米に新時代の若者文化の中心地として広く知られるようになりました。その中で生まれたのが死んで生まれ赤ちゃんのことを歌ったﾎﾟｯﾌﾟﾊﾞﾗｰﾄﾞNovember Snowです。
