Scarlet Ribbons

The Browns

"Scarlet Ribonns"1949年、Jack Segal(ジャック・シーガル)作曲、Evelyn Danzig(エブリン・ダンティヒ)作詞によって書かれました。1952年にはHarry Belafonte(ハリー・ベラフォンテ)がレコーディングし、その後1956年の彼の2番目のアルバムに挿入されました。このアルバムは100万枚の販売を記録、ビルボード誌で6週間トップとなりました。

また、The Brothers Four,The Kingston Trio,Joan Baez(ジョーン・バエズ)等Folk Songからスタンダードまで様々なミュージシャンによってカバーされています。その中で最もヒットしたのは1959年に発表されたThe Brownsのバージョンです。また、Eric Clapton(エリック・クラプトン)がギターを買って初めて覚えた曲がこの曲であると彼の伝記で述べているそうです。

曲は旧約聖書の『創世記』に登場する、大洪水にまつわる、ﾉｱの方舟物語を題材にしたTraditional Ｆｏｌｋ Ｓｏｎｇ です。1960年のNewport Folk FestivalでBob Gibson Trio and Bob CampはＷｅｌｌ Ｗｅｌｌ Ｗｅｌｌを歌いその後､様々なｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟが取り上げるようになりました。The Brothers Fourは1961年のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"BMOC"、Peter, Paul and Maryは1966年ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Album"の挿入曲となっています。また、The Travelers3はﾌｧｰｽﾄｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"The Travelers３"のなかで歌っています。

1962年に発売された、アルバム"Greatest Hits"の挿入曲です。The Brothers Fourの得意なLove Song,  Slowly Slowlyという曲です。あまり、聞かれない曲なので紹介します。

1957年、Harry Belafonte(ﾊﾘｰ･ﾍﾞﾗﾌｫﾝﾃ) が歌い大ﾋｯﾄした"Banana Boat Song"、ジャマイカのバナナを積み出す港で荷役作業をしていた人たちの労働歌です。出だしの、Day-o, day-ay-ay-o（ﾃﾞｲ･ｵｰ･ｴｲ･ｴｲ･ｴｲ･ｵｰ）が非常に印象的な曲です。私も小学校のころ、TVで流れていたのを記憶しています。日本では同年、浜村美智子が歌い同様に大ﾋｯﾄしました。

The Tarriersは1956年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”The Tarriers”に ､また､この歌をなんとThe Brothers Fourも歌っており､1964年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”More Big Folk Hits”に収録しています。

"All My LIfe's A Circle" 1982

 1982年に開催されたWorld Folk Music Associationのコンサートのビデオと思われます。1960年代のFolk Songブームを担ったミュージシャン勢ぞろい、ジュリー・コリンズ、トムパクストン、ライムライターズ、キングストン・トリオ、ブラザース・フォー、マリー・トラバーズ等が出演しています。メンバーを見ると面白いですね。

キングストン・トリオは再編成メンバー、ブラフォーも新メンバー、P,P,Mは解散状態でマリーさんだけです

歌っている曲はHarry Chapin の作品で"Circle"あるいは"All My Life's A Circle"という曲名です。Pete Seegerも歌っていますが、Sing Outの曲として歌われています。
