The Brothers Fourは1964年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"More Big Folk Hits"をﾘﾘｰｽしました。Brother Where Are Youはその中に収録されていますが｡彼らのﾚﾊﾟｰﾄﾘｰの中では珍しく社会性の高い曲となっています。

曲はOscar Brown Jr. （ｵｽｶｰ･ﾌﾞﾗｳﾝ･ｼﾞｭﾆｱ）の作品で1965年､ ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Goes To Washington"に収録しています。彼は米国のﾏﾙﾁな才人でｼﾞｬｽﾞ詩人、ｼﾝｶﾞｰ、ｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾀｰ、そして公民権運動の活動家としても知られ多方面に活動しました。彼は曲を語るように感情をこめてを歌っています。なお､Johnny Riversは（ｼﾞｮﾆｰ･ﾘﾊﾞｰｽ）は1968年の ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Realization"､Al Wilson （ｱﾙ･ｳｨﾙｿﾝ）は1969年のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Searching For The Dolphins"､Thee Midniters（ｽﾘｰ･ﾐｯﾄﾞﾅｲｯﾀｰｽﾞ）は2002年のＣＤｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ" Greatest"で曲をｶﾊﾞｰしています。

この動画はThe Brothers Fourが196１年､ＴＶに出演した時のものです｡ちなみに、ﾏｰｸさんはﾃﾅｰﾊﾞﾝｼﾞｮｰ､ﾃﾞｨｯｸさんは４弦ｷﾞﾀｰを演奏していますがﾃﾞｨｯｸさんの手はほとんど動いていませんね。1960年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ ”The Brothers Four”にこの曲を収録しています。そもそも、Eddystone Lightとは英国のﾚｰﾑ岬､南にある危険なｴﾃﾞｨｽﾄｰﾝ岩礁にあるEddystone（ｴﾃﾞｨｽﾄｰﾝ）灯台の灯りのことです。この歌はBurl Ives（ﾊﾞｰﾙ･ｱｲﾌﾞｽ）によって1953年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Ballads & Folk Songs (Volume 1)” で紹介されて、ﾌｫｰｸ･ｿﾝｸﾞ･ﾘﾊﾞｲﾊﾞﾙ期に広く知られました。起源は､19世紀中頃に発表されたﾐｭｰｼﾞｯｸﾎｰﾙ･ｿﾝｸﾞからと言われています。ﾐｭｰｼﾞｯｸﾎｰﾙとは当時、英国で盛んに行われた音楽だけでなくお笑いや 芝居など大衆芸能，またそれを上演する場所で今で言うﾗｲﾌﾞﾊｳｽのようなものです。灯台守と彼の人魚の奥様との物語を歌っています。そして､歌詞の中でtrimming （ﾄﾘﾐﾝｸﾞ）は、ﾛｳｿｸまたはﾗﾝﾀﾝの手入れをすること､the phosphorous（ﾌｫｽﾌｫﾗｽ）ﾘﾝのことで灯火の燃料となります。

なお､The Weaversは1959年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Travelling On With The Weavers”､The Clancy Brothersは1988年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Tunes 'N' Tales Of Ireland"､Peter, Paul＆Maryは1993年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Peter, Paul & Mommy, Too”に曲を収録しました。また、The Seekersは1995年 (5枚組).CDｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"The Seekers Complete"をﾘﾘｰｽ、1963年にＬｉｖｅ録音、未発表であったこの曲を収録しました。

The Cruel War(悲惨な戦争)は、私にとって非常に思い出深い曲です。高校２年生の頃、ﾍﾞﾄﾅﾑ戦争の反戦感情が広がっていた時期であり反戦歌として流行していました。Peter Paul and Maryのﾊﾞｰｼﾞｮﾝはﾊﾟｰﾄ分けは非常にわかりやすく、当時､同級生であった合唱部のＵ君と吹奏楽部のＭ君とよく、放課中に、音の響く階段で歌っていました。この歌う楽しさが後にﾌｫｰｸ･ｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟ結成のきっかけとなっています。後にＭ君は日本で著名なﾄﾛﾝﾎﾞｰﾝ奏者となり、そして､Ｕ君はＢａｒｋ  Ｙｅｌｌｏｗｓのﾒﾝﾊﾞｰとして５０年以上の付き合いの親友となっています。

さて､この曲は米国のﾄﾗﾃﾞｨｼｮﾅﾙ･ﾌｫｰｸｿﾝｸﾞです。曲名は、一般的にはＴhe Cruel War」とし､歌い出しの歌詞を続けてThe Cruel War Is Ragingとするものもあります。 Peggy Seeger（ﾍﾟｷﾞｰ･ｼｰｶﾞｰ）は1957年､後者の曲名でｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ ”Folksongs And Ballads”に収録しました。.この曲の起源については諸説があり、南北戦争のころには既に歌われていたとされています。1962年にPeter Paul and Maryはﾃﾞﾋﾞｭｰ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Peter, Paul and Mary”に収録しました。

Sonny & Cherのデュオであった、1966年頃からｿﾛとしても活動しその年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Cher"に、1960年代と1970年代に活動したｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄのﾌｫｰｸｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟﾞThe Pattersons（ﾞ）は1968年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Travelling People”に曲を収録しました。 そして､米国のｼﾝｶﾞｰｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾀｰ､女優､作家､事業経営者､人道支援家、ｶﾝﾄﾘｰ･ﾐｭｰｼﾞｯｸの第一人者として知られているDolly Parton（ﾄﾞﾘｰ･ﾊﾟｰﾄﾝ）は2005年､ﾌｫｰｸ･ｿﾝｸﾞを集めたｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Those Were The Days”をﾘﾘｰｽを収録しました。
