最初のビデオは2011年に元ﾌﾞﾗﾌｫｰのDick Foley とTerry Lauberが来日、Back In Townで演奏した時のものです。歌っている曲が”Whiskey In The Jar”です。The Brothers FourはDick Foleyがｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟを脱退、Terry Lauberの加入後、ｺﾝｻｰﾄでよく歌われるようになりました。そして、曲は1996年ﾘﾘｰｽのCDｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”The Tikyo Tapes”に収録されました。

歌は追いはぎがその恋人によって裏切られる物語です。ﾄﾘﾝｷﾝｸﾞ･ｿﾝｸﾞと言われ、最も広く演奏された、伝統的なｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞのﾌｫｰｸｿﾝｸﾞです。1950年代から数々のﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝによって演奏されています。歌詞の中にはｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞの地名が出てきます、【ｺｰﾗｽ】部もｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞ語となっており、多くのﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝはｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞなまりの英語で歌っています。なお、ｽｺｯﾁ･ｳｲｽｷｰはwhisky、ｱｲﾘｼｭ･ｳｲｽｷｰはwhiskey と表記さます。The　Highwaymen(1958)

曲を聴くと学生時代、ｾﾄﾗｰｽﾞという我々の先輩ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞがオハコとしていた歌っていたのを思い出します。1948年、ｼﾝｶﾞｰ・ｿﾝｸﾞﾗｲﾀｰのStan Jones(ｽﾀﾝ･ｼﾞｮｰﾝｽﾞ)が発表したｶﾝﾄﾘｰ･ｿﾝｸﾞです。彼が12歳の時に、友人であった年配のｶｳﾎﾞｰｲから聞いた伝説を基に、作られました。1949年には映画『Riders in the Sky』が封切られ、その中でGene Autry(ｼﾞｰﾝ･ｵｰﾄﾘｰ)が曲を歌っています。Stan Jones自身は1958年のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Creakin' Leather"に収録しました。そして、ﾒﾛﾃﾞｨｰは　Johnny comes marching homeを基調としています。非常にｶﾊﾞｰされている曲でﾋﾞﾝｸﾞ･ｸﾛｽﾋﾞｰ(1949）をはじめ、50名以上のﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝが歌っています。なお、歌詞のあるYippie-I-O, yippie-I-Ayはｶｳﾎﾞｰｲのかけ声です。

Theme From ”A Summer Place”

The Lettermen

The LettermenはTheme From A Summer Placeを1965年にｼﾝｸﾞﾙ・ﾘﾘｰｽしました。夏を題材とした曲でありながら彼らのﾊｰﾓﾆｰは涼しさを感じさせます。ﾋﾞﾙﾎﾞｰﾄﾞではHot100の16位となるﾋｯﾄ曲となりました。もともと､1959年､Sloan Wilson(ｽﾛｰﾝ･ｳｨﾙｿﾝ）による同名小説を映画化､Sandra Dee(ｻﾝﾄﾞﾗ･ﾃﾞｨｰ）とTroy Donahue（ﾄﾛｲ･ﾄﾞﾅﾋｭｰ）が主演した米国のﾜｰﾅｰ作品"A Summer Place”（邦題：避暑地の出来事）のﾃｰﾏ音楽です。1960年にPercy Faith（ﾊﾟｰｼｰ･ﾌｧｲｽ）はｶﾊﾞｰしました。Theme From ”A Summer Place”の曲名でﾘﾘｰｽされ､曲はその年に9週連続全米ﾋｯﾄﾁｬｰﾄの1位を記録、1961年のｸﾞﾗﾐｰ賞を受賞した。ｸﾞﾗﾐｰ賞を映画主題歌およびｲﾝｽﾄｩﾙﾒﾝﾀﾙ曲が受賞したのはこれが初めてでした。

Andy Williamsは1962年に彼のｺﾞｰﾙﾄﾞ･ﾃﾞｨｽｸであるｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Moon River"にJoanie Sommersは同年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Johnny Get Angry"で取り上げています。The Lennon Sistersは 1955年に結成されました。12人兄妹から四姉妹で構成された米国ｶﾘﾌｫﾙﾆｱ州ﾛｻﾝｾﾞﾙｽ･ﾍﾞﾆｽﾋﾞｰﾁ出身の女性ｺｰﾗｽｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟです。

曲はBob Dylanが1964年に次のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑのために書きした。その年のNewport Folk Festivalでも歌われ、彼のｺﾝｻｰﾄでは必ず歌われるようになりました。ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑは翌年゛Bringing It All Back  Home　"としてﾘﾘｰｽされました。同年、The Byrdsがｶﾊﾞｰし、ﾌｧｰｽﾄ･ｼﾝｸﾞﾙとしてﾘﾘｰｽしました。ﾋﾞﾙ簿ｰﾄﾞHOT100の1位、全英ｼﾝｸﾞﾙﾁｬｰﾄでも1位を記録しました。そして、ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Mr.Tambourine Man"がﾘﾘｰｽされ、Folk/Rockﾌﾞｰﾑのさきがけとなりました。

The Brothers Fourは1965年"The Honey Wind Blows"をﾘﾘｰｽ､曲を取り上げました。ｼﾝｸﾞﾙ盤に関してはThe Byrdsより前に録音はできていたがﾗｲｾﾝｽ問題があり、ﾘﾘｰｽできませんでした。もしかすると、ﾌﾞﾗﾌｫｰのﾋｯﾄ曲となっていたかもしれませんね。

なお、長寿人気 TV ｼﾘｰｽﾞ｢ｽﾀｰﾄﾚｯｸ｣のｶｰｸ役のWilliam Shatner(ｳｨﾘｱﾑ･ｼｬﾄﾅｰ)､また､シェリーで有名な Four Seasons もこの曲を歌っています。

The Brothers FourはRock Island Lineという曲の中でRock Island Lineと This Trainの２曲を組合わせ歌っています。この曲も我々のレパ^トリーとして歌っていましたが、彼らは1964 年リリースのコロンビア契約フォーク・ミュージシャン のフォークソング・ダイジェスト版アルバム"All-Star Hootenanny" でThis Trainのみを新しいアレンジで取り上げました。

曲の最初のレコーディングは1922年、Florida Normal and Industrial Institute Quartette（産業の研究所カルテット)によるもので曲名はDis Train(侮辱電車）となっていました。1925年にはWood's Famous Blind Jubilee Singersによって"This train is bound for glory"のバージョンが登場します。

Peter,Paul＆ Maryは1962年リリースの"Peter,Paul＆ Mary",The Seekersは1963年リリースの"Introducing The Seekes"、それぞれの1stアルバムに曲を収録しています。なお、The New Christy Minstrels 1963年TV番組"Hootenanny"に出演したときの映像です。
