最初の動画では1969年1月18日に放映されたﾃﾚﾋﾞ特別番組”The Mama Cass Television Show”でMama Cass（ﾏﾏ・ｷｬｽ）、Joni Mitchell （ｼﾞｮﾆ・ﾐｯﾁｪﾙ）、Mary Travers（ﾏﾘｰ・ﾄﾗﾊﾞｰｽ）が珍しい組み合わせでI Shall Be Releasedを歌っています。そして､Peter,Ｐaul & Mary も1968年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Late Again" に収録しました。
曲はBob Dylan（ﾎﾞﾌﾞ･ﾃﾞｨﾗﾝ）が作詞作曲しました。美しい旋律と精神の自由の問題を掘り下げた宗教的な歌詞によって注目されました。1971年の”Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II ”に収録しました。この曲を初めてﾘﾘｰｽしたのはThe Band（ｻﾞ･ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞ）で1968年のﾃﾞﾋﾞｭｰ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Music from Big Pink”で取り上げています。
Joan Baez（ｼﾞｮｰﾝ・ﾊﾞｴｽﾞ）は1968年、Dylanの曲を集めたｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Any Day Now (Songs of Bob Dylan)”に収めました。また､2012年に公開された1970年代のﾆｭｰﾖｰｸのﾌﾞﾙｯｸﾘﾝでｹﾞｲの男性が育児放棄された障害児を 育てた」という実話を題材に製作された映画、『ﾁｮｺﾚｰﾄﾄﾞｰﾅﾂ（原題: Any Day Now）』にも曲は挿入されています。

The Brothers Fourは1976年にﾘﾘｰｽのｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Now”に曲を収録しました。原曲はJacques Brel(ｼﾞｬｯｸ･ﾌﾞﾚﾙ)が1961年にﾘﾘｰｽしたｼｬﾝｿﾝ、Le Moribond（The Dying Man、瀕死の人）です。この曲は米国の詩人でｼﾝｶﾞｰの、 Rod McKuen(ﾛｯﾄﾞ･ﾏｯｹﾝ)によって英語に翻訳されました。最初にThe Ｋｉｎｇｓｔｏｎ Trio(ｷﾝｸﾞｽﾄﾝ･ﾄﾘｵ)によってﾚｺｰﾃﾞｨﾝｸﾞされましたが､ｾｰﾙｽは芳しくありませんでした。同様に、The Beach Boys(ﾋﾞｰﾁ･ﾎﾞｰｲｽﾞ) が1970年にﾃﾞｭｵ・ｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟ、The Poppy Family(ﾎﾟﾋﾟｰ･ﾌｧﾐﾘｰ)のTerry Jacks(ﾃﾘｰ･ｼﾞｬｯｸｽ)のﾌﾟﾛﾃﾞｭｰｽで同曲をﾚｺｰﾃﾞｨﾝｸﾞしましたが、結局、ﾘﾘｰｽしませんでした。
The Beach Boysが発売しないことを決めた後、Terry Jacksは自らこの曲を歌うことを決意、1973年12月にｼﾝｸﾞﾙをﾘﾘｰｽ、すると､彼の母国ｶﾅﾀﾞはもとより、米国のﾋﾞﾙﾎﾞｰﾄﾞHot100では1974年3月2日から3月16日まで3週連続でﾁｬｰﾄ1位を記録、この年の年間ﾁｬｰﾄでも2位となる大ﾋｯﾄとなりました。なお､全世界での売上は1150万枚にも達しました。
