The Brothers Four

トラディショナル・フォークソングの代表曲"Goodnight, Irene"は1933年にLead Belly（レッド・ベリー》によってレコーディングされました。彼の死後の翌年、1950年The Weaversはシングルをリリースしました。曲はビルボード誌・ベストセラー・チャートに25週連続チャートイン、同年のビルボード年間Iopなりました。

The Brothers Fourは1961年のアルバム"Sobg Book"に、The Kingston Triは1963年アルバム "Once Upon A Time"　で曲をとり上げいぇいます。

If I Fell (恋におちたら）

The Brothers Four 

 1964年にThe Beatles主演の映画「ビートルズがやってくるYAH,YAH,YAH」が公開されました。当時、多忙であった彼らの１日をドキュメンタリー風に描いた作品で、"If I Fell" はその中で歌われていますす。そして、同年に同名のアルバムがリリースされ、曲は映画のサウンドトラックを録音したA面に入っています。Lennon/McCartney の作品で、ジョンはプレイボーイ誌のインタヴューで「当時の妻以外の女性との半自伝的な曲」と語っています。ジョンとポールのコーラスは非常に美しく、特にポールのパートはユニークなものとなっており、YOU TUBEでも紹介されています。

1966年にはThe Beatlesは来日、今年で50年になります。その年 The Brothers Fourはアルバム"A Beatles' Songbook”、また、The Pozo Seco Singersもファーストアルバム"Time"の中で曲を取り上げています。

”Swing Low, Sweet Chariot ”は、ﾃﾈｼｰ州ﾅｯｼｭﾋﾞﾙのﾌｨｽｸ大学で1870年代に活動していたｱﾌﾘｶ系ｱﾒﾘｶ人ｸﾞﾙｰﾌﾟThe Fisk Jubilee Singers(ﾌｨｽｸ・ｼﾞｭﾌﾞﾘｰ・ｼﾝｶﾞｰｽﾞ）」によってアメリカ各地に広められた黒人霊歌です。音源は米国議会図書館に保存されている1909年録音のものです。

この曲、我々はThe Modern Folk Quartetを　ｶﾊﾞｰしていましたがいつの間にか歌わなくなっています。曲は彼らの1963年の ﾌｧｰｽﾄｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ　”First"の中に収められています。Pete Seegerは1959年ﾘﾘｰｽのｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ ‎” American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 3” で紹介しています。 なお、The Brothers Fourは1961年のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Ｓong Book”にCome For To Carry Me Homeと言う曲名で、The Travelers 3は1962年､彼ら2枚目のｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Open House”にThe Rooftop Singersは2004年､ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ”Best Of The Vanguard Years” に収録しています 。

"Children Go Where I Send Thee"は伝統的なアフリカ系アメリカ人のスピリチャル・ソングで、しばしば、クリスマスキャロルとして歌われます。P,P&Mはこの曲と"Jane Jane"を組み合わせJane Jane"を歌っています。また、1969年の｛第3回ライトミュージックコンテスト」では「赤い鳥」はThe Travelers3 をカバー,この曲と”Come And Go With Me"を組み合わせグランプリを獲得,そして「オフコース」はP,P&Mの”Jane Jane"をカバーし２位となりました。

The Travelers3はエクストラレコードからキャピトルレコードに移籍した1964年にアルバム"New Sounds" をリリースしました。彼らの4枚目のアルバムで清吾のアルバムとなりました。曲はその中に収録されています フォーク・ミユージシャンで最初にレコード化したのはThe Weaversで1951年"One For The Little Bitty Baby" をリリースしました。P,P%Mは1988年クリスマス・コンサートを収録、2011年にDVD"The Holiday Concert"をリリース、曲を単独で歌っています。なお、The Kingston Trioは1960年のアルバム"The Last Month Of The Year"、The Seekersは1963年のアルバム"Introducing The Seekers"で曲を取り上げています。

55 Days at Peking（北京の55日）

 北京の55日　予告編

1963年に製作・公開された上映時間160分の米国映画です。清朝末期に義和団の乱Tが起こり、首都北京に義和団が押し寄せて、外国人居留区が包囲されて11か国の居留民が籠城して55日間を戦った物語を描いています。主演はチャールトン・ハストン、伊丹十三も出演しました。この排外運動である義和団の乱は清の植民地化を一層進めました。事件後,中国 東北部地方をめぐって日露の対立は深まり、日露戦争が勃発しました。

この映画の主題歌”55 Days At Peking”(北京の55日)を歌ったのが、The Brothers Fourです。1963年シングルをリリース、大ヒットしました。曲のイントロ部の「ボム-ボム-ボム」はよく口づさみました。また、出だしの歌詞の「The year was 1900」で義和団の乱の年号を覚えました。日本上映に合わせ日本でも克美しげるのCoverシングルがリリースされました。何と、B面は同じ時期に放送が開始された「エイト・マン」が入っています。確か、番組の提供は「のりたま」の丸美屋だったと思います。
