Sagami Bay lies south of Kanagawa Prefecture in central Japan, bounded by the Miura Peninsula to the east and by the northern half of the Izu Peninsula to the west. To the south the bay opens far out into the ocean; and the Shonan coastline to the north, while the island of Oshima marks the southern extent of the bay. Major cities on the bay include Manazuru, Odawara, Hiratsuka, and Kamakura.

A branch of the warm "Kuroshio" (Black Current) which flows eastward between Oshima Island and the south of the Izu Peninsula, comes into the bay during certain season of the year. Under such local conditions, the water abounds in all sorts of marine fauna and flora. The maximum depth of the bay is about 1500 meters.
