この、The Water Is Wideは、1958年ﾘﾘｰｽされたPete Seegerの ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"American Favorite Ballads Vol,2"で全米で初めて紹介されました。原題がｽｺｯﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞ民謡の"O Waly Waly(オー 悲しい 悲しい)"と言う曲がｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙとされています。

そして、歌詞はﾐｭｰｼﾞｼｬﾝにより様々なﾊﾞｰｼﾞｮﾝになっています。The Kingston TrioはﾒﾝﾊﾞｰのNick Reynolds（ﾆｯｸ･ﾚｲﾉﾙｽﾞ）の作詞でThe River is wide(ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"Make Away”1961年)を、The New Christy Minstrelsは  Columbia Last Farewell(ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ".Ramblin”1963年)を  Peter,Paul&MaryはﾒﾝﾊﾞｰでMaryさんのｿﾛに合わせ女性の歌詞でThere is a ship(ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑ"In Concert"1964年)を歌っています。
