ジャックは、怠けもので、みんなが「怠け者のジャック」と呼んだ。 Jack was lazy. He was called "Lazy Jack."

それを手に握って帰ったジャックは、途中落としてしまった。 He grasped 1 penny in his hand and got back home. But he fell and lost it on his way back.
母親が、怒って「もらったものはポケットに入れなさい」とジャックに言った。 His mother got angry and said to him."You have to put your thing in your pocket."

水曜日、ジャックは牛乳屋で働いた。 On Wednesday, Jack hired himself to a milkman.
報酬に、ジャックは牛乳が入った瓶をもらった。 Jack was given a jug of milk as his wage.
母親の言葉を思いだし、彼はミルクをズボンのポケットにそそぎ入れた。 Jack remembered what his mother had said. He poured the milk into his pockets of trousers.
家につくと、もうミルクは、漏れてなくなってしまった。 When he reached his house, the milk completely leaked out from his pochets, and was not there.
母親が怒って、「もらったものは頭に乗せて運びなさい」と言った。 His mother got angry and said, "You have to put your thing on your head to carry it."

木曜日、ジャックは再び、農場で働いた。 On Thursday, Jack hired himsef to a farmer again.
報酬に、ジャックはクリームチーズをうけとった。 As his wage, he was given some cream cheese.
それを、ジャックは頭に乗せて運んだので、みんな溶けて流れてしまた。 He put it on his head and carried it. Therefore, it completely melted and flowed away.
母親が怒って「もらったものはバッグに入れて運びなさい」と言った。 His mother got angry and said, "You have to put your thing in your bag and carry it."

金曜日、ジャックは、パン屋で働いた。 On Friday, he hired himself to a baker.
残ったパンがなかったので、パン屋はジャックに賃金として、雄猫をくれた。 There was no bread left, the baker gave Jack a tom-cat.
ジャックは、雄猫をバッグに入れた。 Jack put it in a bag.
雄猫は、途中で、バッグを破って逃げてしまった。 On his way back, the tom-cat broke the bag and ran away.
母親が怒って「もらったものは、綱をつけて、引っぱってきなさい」と言った。His mother got angry and said, "You have to tie your thing with a rope and drag it."

土曜日、ジャックは肉屋で働いた。 On Saturday, Jack hired himself to a butcher.
肉屋は、報酬に、羊肉の立派な肩肉をくれた。 The butcher rewarded him a fine shoulder of mutton.
ジャックはそれを綱で縛り、引きずって帰ってきたので、肉はバラバラになりなくなってしまった。 Jack tied it with rope and dragged it going back home. The mutton was broken into pieces and lost.
母親は怒り「もらったものは、背中に担いできなさい」と言った。 His mother got angry and said, "You have to carry your thing on your shoulder and get home."

次の月曜日、ジャックは市場で農場主を助け働いた。 On next Monday, he hired himsef to a farmer again and worked at a market.
ジャックがよく働いたので、農場主は、とても喜び、彼にロバをくれた。 As Jack worked diligently, the farmer got so delighted that he gave Jack a donkey.
ジャックは、大変な思いをして、背中にロバを担いで運んで行った。 Jack managed to bear a donkey on his shoulder and got back home.
それを見て、みんながあきれて笑った。 Looking at it, and every one loughed.

当時、町に金持ちの男がいて、彼の娘はとてもかわいかったが、耳が聞こえず、口もきけなかった。 At that time, there lived a rich man in the town. Her daughter was very pretty, but deaf and dumb.
その上彼女は、全く笑わなかった。 Moreover, she didn't laugh at all.
医者が、「彼女が笑えば、耳も聞こえるようになり、口もきけるようになる」と言った。 A doctor said, "If she laughs, she is cured and comes to be able to hear and talk."
金持ちの男は、「娘を笑わせた者を、娘と結婚させる」と言った。 The rich man said, "A man who laughs my daughter can marry her"

ジャックが、ロバを背負って、金持ちの男の家の前を通った。 Jack walked in front of the rich man's house bearing a donkey on his shoulder.
娘は、その様子を見て、笑った。 The daughter looked at Jack and laughed.
すると、たちまち、彼女は、耳が聞こえるようになり、口もきけるようになった。 Immedeately, she came to be able to hear and talk.
金持ちの男は、大変喜び、ジャックを娘の婿にした。 The rich man was very delighted and made his daughter marry Jack.
「怠け者のジャック」は金持ちになり、その後、妻とずっと幸せに暮らした。 "Lazy Jack" became rich and afterwards lived happily with his wife for a long time.
母親も幸せな老後を送った。 His mother also lived happily her old life.
《感想1》
１ペニー、牛乳、クリームチーズ、雄猫、羊肉、ロバという取り合わせが、イギリス風だ。日本昔話だったら、１銭、味噌汁、干しアワビ、犬、鴨肉、鹿かもしれない。

ジャックは、「働くのも悪くない」と思うようになった。ただし、話がうますぎる。

ジャックは、人が言ったことを、素直に信じすぎた。状況に応じて、臨機応変な判断が必要だ。結婚して、金持ちになり、義理の父の会社で働くが、きちんとつとまるか心配だ。
