Last Friday, the students from the Copenhagen International School (CIS) gathered together for the last time this year. However, this wasn’t a Christmas affair, it was a celebration of the festival of light.
Some 1,000 students, teachers and parents joined the festivities, squeezing into the school’s sports hall where a procession of girls, dressed in white and carrying lit candles, commemorated St Lucia’s Day.
This tradition is very popular in Scandinavia, particularly in Sweden, and marks the darkest time of the year.
By bringing the light, ‘the little Lucias’ help people get through the long winter.
Goodbye forever
Students from the primary classes then sang and played several Christmas songs, and CIS used this opportunity to look back and review the eventful year of 2015.
As is usual, the celebration was a bit bittersweet as the school had to say goodbye to several students whose parents are being relocated to other countries.
To remember their time at CIS, each of the students got a Danish flag sporting a logo of CIS.
At the end, Santa came to cheer everyone up again and the school was dismissed for three weeks over the winter holidays to give students enough time with their families in far-off corners of the world.
