Region
AOC Lirac, west bank of the southern Rhone, 16km north of Avignon.
Cepage
40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette, 15% Bourboulenc, 15% Marsanne.
Style
When young it is very pale, with fresh fruit aromas and a zesty palate. However, after 2 years or so the colour deepens and the aroma becomes almost nutty with more depth and roundness, dried apricot flavours and a clean 'chewy' finish.
Serve
Lightly chilled, a versatile wine, which complements a broad range of dishes including fish, poultry or pasta. Cellarage: Optimum drinking within 2-4 years of vintage.
Vinification
Most of the wine is fermented in inox (stainless steel) and a portion in new oak barrels, at 16 - 18 degrees. The wine is bottled early in the New Year.
History
Lirac's dubious claim to viticulture fame is that is was the first place in France for phylloxera to strike - at Chateau Clary in 1863. Lirac has always been overshadowed by its illustrious neighbour Chateauneuf du Pape and as a result represents fantastic value for money. It was granted AOC status in 1945 and was heavily replanted by Algerian repatriates in the 1960's who planted innovative 'new' grape varieties. Historically only red and rose was produced in this area, the Forcadiere vineyards cover 44 hectares, 10 of which are for the white grape varieties. The Lirac is sold under the registered name La Fermade (the small holding). Armaud Maby (ex- Mayor of Tavel) and his son Roger are very up to date wine makers; they continually strive to improve techniques resulting in a sophisticated range of wines.

Colour : Red
Grape variety : Grenache noir (50 %), Mourv醇Qdre (25 %), Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut.
Soils : Plateau de Lirac (rolling stones).
Character : Red ruby colour.
FLavours : The nose reveals aromas of red little fruits (blueberry, burlat cherry), garrigue and sweet spices. The mouth presents a strict texture surrounded by colorful and harmonious tanins.
Longevity : 3 to 5 years
Tasting temperature : To savour between 16 and 17°C.
Best served with : It will accompany perfectly red meats and big games.
