Introduction to Japanese Culture I (Syllabus)

Number: 28ASIA 181-001

Hours & Rooms: Thursday, 5:00-5:50 p.m. @M200

Course Description: This course provides students with an overview of Japanese Culture. The course, part of a three course sequence, is primarily activity-oriented course based on practical topics such as calligraphy, basic SADO (tea ceremony), IKEBANA (flower arrangement), Japanese Dancing (Bon-Dance), ORIGAMI (paper folding), Japanese food culture, and customs and manners. The course will also include HAIKU and folk tales/novels, geography, and contemporary and historical culture topics such as proverbs, music, Anime, religions etc. in Japanese life. The course is taught in English with some basic vocabulary in Japanese; useful phrases will be introduced in each class that enables students to enjoy simple greetings and conversations. Authentic materials will be prepared from instructor’s Japanese network. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: Develop an appreciation of origami, be knowledgeable of the world trend of Japanese Anime, increase awareness of Japanese customs by participating in a tea ceremony, and become knowledgeable in Japanese literature and culture.
