２００９年度 京都大学 英作文

今年も懲りずにトライしてみる。

（１）子供のころには列車での旅行というのは心躍るものであった。年に一度、
夏休みに祖父母の家に行くときには、何時間も列車に乗ると考えただけでわく
わくした。今では長距離列車を見ても、子供のころのように気分が高まること
はないが、大きな駅のホームに日本各地に向かうさまざまな列車が並んでいる
光景は鮮明に覚えているし、発車の瞬間の独特の高揚感を思い出すこともある。

Traveling by train was something that would get my heart excited when I was a kid.
For the once-a-year visit to my grandparents during the summer holiday seasons,
I was hyped up with just an imagination of being on board a train for hours.
Being at this age, a sight of long-distance trains doesn't give me excitement anymore.
The scene is, however, clearly on my mind, of various kinds of trains bound for
each and every part of Japan which were sitting alongside the platforms of a large station,
and that unique sensation of the moment the train began to move sometimes flashes
across my mind.

（２）私たちは漠然と犬やイルカを賢いと思っているが、動物の賢さを測る客観的
な基準に基づいてそう判断しているわけではない。そういった動物の場合、
人間の命令によく従うほど、頭が良いようにみえるだけではないだろうか。
人間の場合には種々のいわゆる客観テストなるものがあるが、それも結局、
出題者の指示によく従うことが高得点に結びついているのかもしれない。

Our blurred assumption is that dogs and dolphins are smart, but such an argument
is not based off of an objective standard for measuring animal intelligence.
Pertaining to those kinds of animals, let me tell you, it is that the more they follow
orders directed at them by humans, the more intellectual they may look. As far as humans
are concerned, there are many types of so called objective examinations. Those might be,
after all, so composed that more obedience to the instructions from the examiner leads to
higher grade assessment.


簡単に見えて難しい。心躍る、わくわくする、高揚感などをどう表現し、どう表現し分けるのか。
また、「考えただけで」をthinkやthoughtと訳して正解と判断されるのかどうか。
「賢い」も同じ。微妙なニュアンスの差異を読み取ることが期待されているのか、
それとも高校生にはそこまで求めないのだろうか。
「覚えている」や「思い出す」などを以下に上手く処理できるかは
これまでにどれだけ英作文を作ってきたかではなく、
どれだけたくさんのnaturalな英語を読んできたかによる。
remember, remind, recallなどは実は使いどころが難しい。
覚えることと思いだすことの”哲学的”な意味合いの違いは、
文化の違いとも相俟って理解するのは非常に難しい。
作文ならば無視してＯＫ。
だが翻訳となるとどうだろう。
このあたりが京大と、東大、阪大のレベルの違い。
もちろん前者が（圧倒的に）上である、と個人的に感じる。
京大の英作文に求められるような力をつけたい場合、
英和辞書よりも国語の辞書とthesaurus（類義語辞典）の方が役立つかな。
