Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology,
What should we learn for our future?
We planned to visit Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology to investigate how the marine technology, which could be alienated from general public, is related to ordinary lives. The professor who we are going to meet in this university was Mr.Sasaki. He teaches students and does research on marine policies and culture. He answered us directly as if he already know our questions. It was impressive that there are people who are sincerely worried about the earth and ocean and try to coexist with nature. And their kindness made us thankful.
Department of Marine Policies and Culture is aiming at enhancing public recognition on the marine environmental. The professor emphasized that it is necessary to set up international standard for marine education and communicate worldwidely. For this, we should try to raise technological status and change public lives by political and educational methods. Especially, I’d like to introduce the ‘education’ thing, which I deeply agreed with.
According to his saying, Asian education system is focused on just learning, which wants students not to participate autonomously to their studying. On the other hand, Western edudation system is inclined to extreme initiative, which leads students to miss every other important thing without finding new things. So Asian and western education system should be collaborated. In this point, Tokyo University is trying to cooperate with University of Berkely for introducing new learning cycle, which is comprised with invitation, exploration, concept invention, application and final reflection. As he explained this new mechanism to us, I could feel his educational agony and unceasing efforts, which stimulated me positively.
While, one of our main question was about diplomatic conflicts that could occur in the process of marine researching. Because Korea and Japan is very sensitive to territorial conflicts, there might be some interruptions in researching. Mr.Sasaki answered that both Korea and Japan should challenge their own interests. In this way, we all could create totally new values. And also for this, all the countries around the world should exchange their students to learn global marine field and make them true ocean leaders. He added that the learning cycle which I mentioned above, could help easing the worldwide conflicts.
After the interview, we had lunch with students who study following Mr.Sasaki. It was very special lunch because we are not university students now, which means it was first time to eat something in cafeteria of an university! The student in the picture is in graduate shool now, and wants to teach a neglected class of children to raise their recognition on the ocean field. When I heard her about this, I worried if it would be hard for her to get living stably. But I reproved myself because she is so great that has studied so long not for snobbish trends but for her own belief. Which values should I follow for my whole life? Talking to her, I made my mind to judge precisely which is right or wrong and follow this belief sternly. It was so short journey, but I was so honored that I could meet very nice people and feel valuable things.
