“Despite some fiscal stimulus, Korea’s economy will grow by 2.0 percent in 2019 and 2.1 percent in 2020, significantly lower than the 3.0 percent average annual growth rate of the last five years,” Moody’s projected.

The fallout would also hurt Japan but “to a smaller degree,” the agency predicted, and forecast Japan’s economy to grow by 0.7 percent in 2019 and 0.4 percent in 2020.

Moody’s noted that Korea’s broad boycott movement against Japanese goods and services in protest of the trade restrictions may dent sales. But it saw trade in intermediate goods – including those covered by the export curbs and also more correlated to the global economic downturn – as “posing a larger threat to the Japanese economy.”
