Sammy Wilson job remarks spark legal warning
By David Gordon
Tuesday, 27 January 2009 A legal warning was sounded yesterday after a DUP minister’s call for local people to be given jobs ahead of foreign nationals.
Environment Minister Sammy Wilson claims it made sense to give preference to people “with roots here”.
However, the Equality Commission’s chief commissioner Bob Collins said: “You can’t discriminate against somebody in terms of employment on grounds of race. Race includes national identity or national or ethnic origin. That’s absolutely clear.”
Mr Collins said citizens of the EU are entitled to be fairly considered in employment decisions.
Discrimination in favour of local people is barred under race relations law here, underpinned by legislation in Europe.
Mr Collins added: “It’s perfectly valid for people to hope that economic activity will have real and rooted and longstanding benefits in the community. But you can’t translate that into giving preference to people from Northern Ireland irrespective of the standard of applications from other people.” belfasttelegraph

で、一般人のフォーラムでも賛否両論ありまして、
I think Sammy is spot on, the cheek of these foreigners coming over here, taking our jobs, land, refusing to integrate with the locals, forcing their language on the natives, marching around like they own the place, I mean who do they think they are, Unionists? : )
外国人がおれらの仕事を奪っておきながら、地元民ともなじもうとせず、自分らの言葉をおれらに押し付けているのは何事か、と。
This is a perfect example of blaming johnny foreigner when times get tough. Anyone trying to justify this stance is in la la land. The DUP don't have the credibility to make these kind of statements and for them to be taken as anything other than racist. Scarier still, a lot of the threads seem to think he is just being realistic.
なにかあると、すぐに外人のせいにするのはよくない、と。
The DUP may well pay lip service to equality legislation but that's all they do. When you have elected reps making hateful speeches against the gay community and your party leader leading the guffaws about it at your party conferance then the truth is rather different.
Add to this Sammy's incitement to employers to break EU and local fair employment laws then the reality really is different.
