綺麗な自然の動物の写真が付いた、自分の住所シールが送られて来ました。裏をみたら、マーチオブダイムズからのシールでした。早速サイトに行き、寄付をしました。マーチ・オブ・ダイムは、赤ちゃんの健康を守ることを目的にしたＮＰＯです。元来は自身もポリオ患者だったフランクリン・ルーズベルト大統領の発案で、ポリオの治療と予防を目標に全国小児麻痺基金という名称で1938年に設立されたヴォランティア団体です。その後コメディアンであるエディ・カンターがラジオ番組で「マーチ・オブ・ダイムス」という用語を使って、この基金が世に広められました。やがてポリオのワクチンが1955年に発明され、問題が収束に向かった後1958年からは、低体重出生児を中心に新生児の健康増進が目標として定められました。現在の年間財政規模は2億ドル余りで、歳入のほとんどは企業や個人からの寄付によっています。
