Battered and weary, this dog was rescued after 40 hours buried underground by his heartless owner.
Neighbours helped dig Jerry the Brittany spaniel out from below two-feet of earth and bricks in Delsenzano, Italy, after hearing his whimpering.
Police say the owner piled layer upon layer of earth on top of the dog to make sure he could not dig his way out.

Boston cops beat man for videotaping

On Wednesday, Maury Paulino filed a civil lawsuit against the city of Boston and four local police officers for falsely arresting him and for using excessive force.
The arrest stems from a 2009 incident where Paulino used his cell phone to video record his friend, Pablo Guerrero, being detained by four cops.
Officer Seth Richard arrested Paulino for recording the arrest and then violently attacked him.
In the lawsuit, Paulino alleges he was punched, kneed and pepper-sprayed by Officer Richard. The other cops, says Paulino, failed to intervene.
According to the lawsuit, Paulino was at the police station to bail out Guerrero. Allegedly Guerrero began to argue with an officer while he was being released. In an attempt to help document the situation, Paulino started recording the officers after they allegedly started to rough up his friend.
Paulino was charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, assaulting a police officer and a wiretapping charge but ultimately was found not guilty of any wrong doing.
“Police do not want that sort of scrutiny and they don’t want to be held accountable,” David Milton, Paulino’s attorney, tells WBUR News. “This is a pattern, and police know this is a pattern and they don’t seem to be doing anything about it,” Milton adds.

No homes or jobs for US vets

America’s veterans are returning home from wars to staggering unemployment and homelessness rates. RT reports on what life post-war is like for thousands of US servicemen.

Their job is to defend their country’s interests, but once that job wraps up, their country has no interest in them any longer. Tens of thousands of American war veterans are simply being discarded.

“They are coming home to a disproportionate rate of homelessness, of foreclosures and evictions. In 2010 a whopping 75,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in the United States were homeless; were sleeping on the streets,” said Iraq war veteran Michael Prysner to RT.

There are said to be 18 suicide attempts a day among veterans in America, hundreds each month – handling the realities of being forgotten at home is tough.

“When you come home, you’re foreclosed on, your job is gone, and then they want you to go to shelters. And shelters pretty much housing criminals, drug addicts, and a lot of us can’t tolerate that lifestyle,” said homeless U.S. army veteran Joe Mangione.

Five American Muslims on racial-ethnic profiling: ‘This is my country. I feel insulted.’

Over the past several weeks, a growing number of law enforcement documents have surfaced pointing to the institutional profiling of Muslims in the decade after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. First, an Associated Press investigation revealed a large-scale New York Police Department effort to collect intelligence on Muslims in the New York area, with police conducted surveillance on Muslim neighborhoods, mosques and businesses, even checking out immigrants who changed their names to sound more American.

Also controversial has been the use of counterterrorism training materials by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, under fire for using materials portraying Muslims in a negative light. And late last month, the American Civil Liberties Union issued a report alleging that the FBI targeted specific ethnic communities across the United States based on race, ethnicity, religion and nationality for potential criminal investigation.

While Muslims weren’t the only ones scrutinized, the organization said that FBI documents obtained via the Freedom of Information Act showed that agents monitored Muslim and Arab-American communities in Michigan as a probable terrorist recruitment ground. Law enforcement officials have contended they were engaging in effective crime mapping, not ethnic profiling.

KPCC intern Yasmin Nouh spoke with several American Muslims in California after the latter report was released, some of them community leaders, others rank-and-file citizens. Some have been subject to law enforcement scrutiny themselves, including the president of an Orange County, Calif. mosque infiltrated by an FBI informant.
