◎井上馨を押し倒し、顔に墨を塗った婦人

　珍しや、英語研究雑誌『青年』を何冊か入手した。のちの『英語青年』の、創刊当時のタイトルは『青年』（The Rising Generation）であった。発行元は、「ジャパン、タイムス社内青年発行所」である。

　その第二巻第一一号（一八九九年一二月）を、ペラペラと見ていたら、「井上伯婦人にへこまさる」という記事が載っていた。実におもしろい。英語研究雑誌にふさわしく、その英訳もついている。

　本日は、これを紹介してみよう。井上伯とあるのは、明治の元勲・井上馨〈イノウエ・カオル〉のことである（一八八四年伯爵、一九〇七年侯爵）。

　出典は、『明治閨秀美談』とあるが、正しくは、鈴木光二郎著『明治閨秀美譚』（東京堂、一八九二）。原著における、この文章のタイトルは、「齋藤夫人墨を以て井上伯の面を抹す」である。句読点は、礫川が付した。漢字の読みについては、国会図書館デジタルコレクションの『明治閨秀美譚』を参照した。

　農商務書記官商務局長齋藤修一郎氏の夫人は、府下、材木商某の女【むすめ】なり。性、不羈〈フキ〉にして、人に阿ねらず〈オモネラズ〉、能く〈ヨク〉世の傑士を御す〈ギョス〉。氏、曽て〈カツテ〉、外務農商務大臣の秘書官として、井上伯に侍す〈ジス〉。伯、元【もと】、活達機敏。婦女と戯れ、言ふ毎〈ゴト〉に、其欠点を指す。偶々〈タマタマ〉、官舎に夜会ありて、貴女、群集す。夫人、亦、其の中【うち】にあり。応接、儼乎〈ゲンコ〉として、人に媚言を呈せず。方正、自ら〈オノズカラ〉持す。已にして〈スデニシテ〉、会、散する時、伯、復〈マタ〉、夫人に戯れて、冷評を下す。語気、甚だ滑稽なり。夫人、其無礼を憎み、忽ち、伯に組み附き、引き倒して、之を膝下〈シッカ〉に敷き、有合ふ〈アリアウ〉大筆を執て〈トッテ〉、其面を塗り、微笑して曰く、伯、若し〈モシ〉、冷語を止めずんば、墨汁、尚ほ〈ナオ〉、伯の面に注がんと。伯、為めに閉口す。
夫人、亦、家政を斉へ〈トトノエ〉、氏を助けて、外交、華美の費【ひ】に乏しからざらしむ。（明治閨秀美談抄録）

　ANECDOTES OF CONTEMPORARY WOMEN.
　COUNT INOUYE WORSTED BY A YONG LADY.
　Mrs. Shuichiro Saito, whose husband was at one time the Vice-Minister of Agriculture and Commerce, is a daughter of a certain lumber merchant of Tokyo. She is a lady of candour, free from any taint of toadyism, and well able to cope with the great men of the time. Her husband was at one time a personal Secretary to Count Inouye when he ocupied the chair of the Department of Foreign Affairs and that of Agriculture and Commerce. Now the Count is a man of great vivacity and tact, and whenever he makes merry with any of the other sex, he does not scruple to point out her defects physical or otherwise. It happened that Count should hold an evening party at his official residence, inviting quite a large number of ladies, Mrs. Saito among the rest. Grave in her talk and not stooping herself to any thing savoring of servility, she bore herself, in short, with perfect uprightness. Meanwhile the party came to an end, when the host, unable to restrain his mischievous bent, bantered Mrs. Saito, and made some remarks which were exceedingly ridicuirs. Mrs. Saito was highly incensed at this discourtesy of the host. and at once seized hold of him, bore him down under her knees, and seizing a large writing brush that happened to lie near by, smeared over the face of the Count with ink, telling him with a smile that should he persist it making such mischievous remarks there was more ink to adorn his face. The Count was entirely disconcerted.
　Mrs. Saito conducts her domestic affairs quite systematically, and by helping her husband in this way keeps him supplied with funds to carry on social duties in their manifold form.

　おそらく、この婦人は、ヤワラ（柔術）の心得があったのであろう。でなければ、男を押し倒し、膝で抑えつけた上で、顔に墨を塗るというような芸当はできない。「之を膝下に敷き」とは、左脚（左膝）を床に置いた上で、右膝で、相手の胸部を抑えたのであろう。だとすると、「之を膝下に敷き」の訳は、bore him down under her kneeのほうが良いのではないか（こまかいことだが）。
