予選18位、をうけて。
「昨日はちょっと運が悪くて、コースに出る時間が大幅にけずられてしまった。2時間のうち、ちゃんとやれたのは40分くらいで、まだバイクを理解しようとしてる僕にとっては十分ではなかったね。今日、僕らはずいぶん進歩したし、予選からスーパーポールまでたった0.1秒だった。単に予選が午前中だったからなんだけど。午後のフリーセッションではスーパーポールに届くようなタイムだった。ほかの選手の何人かからは0.1秒かそこら離れてるだけだったし、それは僕らが進歩して新しいバイクに慣れてきてるってことだよね。」

Chris Vermeulen: “We had a bit of bad luck yesterday, and lost a lot of track time. We basically had a bout 40 minutes out of the two hours, and it was not what we needed as I am still trying to get a better understanding of the bike. Today we improved a lot and we were only a few tenths away from qualifying into Superpole, simply because the qualifying session was held in the morning. In the afternoon free session we set a time that would have got us into Superpole. I’m only a tenth or so off some of the other guys so it shows we are improving and getting used to the new bike.”

レース後コメント　17.04.2011

クリス・ヴァーミューレンは足の筋肉がまだ十分に回復しておらず、レースを走り切ることができないことが判明した。しかし、9周目に足の痙攣に見舞われるまでいいポイントを獲得できるような位置につけていた。レース2はスタートすることはなかった。
「足の強度が足らないって理由だけで止まってしまったけど、レースを完走しようとしてたんだ。それでも、いくらかのケースでは有効なデータがいくつかとれた。僕の足は痙攣してしまって、ちょっと周回してやめなきゃいけなかった。ペースはそんなに悪くなかったし、ポイントを取れる位置をおさえていたけれど、最後までやりぬくことはできなかったんだ。本当に週末だなって、このバイクに乗って感じられたのは初めてだね。チームがやってくれたことには満足してるけど、まだやらなきゃいけないことがいっぱいある。今のところではバイクの理解という点でチームメイトにかなり遅れを取っているからね。モンツァでは週末いっぱいレースができるように準備しなきゃいけないって思ってるよ。」

Chris Vermeulen found that his leg muscles had still not recovered enough to compete over full race distance but he was in a good points scoring position until he was forced to withdraw with cramp in his leg on lap nine. He did not start race two.
Chris Vermeulen: “I stopped just because of a lack of strength in my leg but we went out to try and complete the full races. We still got some useful data in any case. My leg just cramped up and I had to stop after a few laps. My pace was not so bad and I was holding down a points scoring position but I just could not get to the end. This is the first time I have been able to feel the bike really working, and I made some set-up changes because I was pushing at a decent level sometimes this weekend. I am happy with what the team has done but we have a lot of work still to do, just because I am a long way behind my team-mates in learning the bike at present. I think I should be ready for a full weekend of racing at Monza.”

確かに、二日目のフリーセッションはちょっと順位を上げてて、なんとかレースを完走するのを期待してたんですけどね。
やっぱ無理かぁ～。
まだまだかかるよね～。
モンツァも分からんよ、きっと、また練習走行だよ。
いいんだよ、少しずつで。急がば回れだよ。
とにかく、レースのスタートラインに並べただけでも嬉しいです。

ヴァーミューレンという名前が元来オランダのもであることは明白であるが、彼のレースへの完全復帰を迎える国との結びつきはどれほど親密なのか？ オーストラリアの海岸で見るクリス・ヴァーミューレンは、短パン、サンダル、サングラスで、一部の隙もないクイーンズランダーであり、オーストラリアの東沿岸の温かい海で遊ぶ気満々な格好だ。

しかし、水面下には大きな層があり、クリスのオランダ遺伝子はそこに息づいている。事実、彼とカワサキのチーム全体がWSBK第3戦アッセンにむけて準備をはじめたことで、その関係性がますます見えてきているのだ。

クリスの説明によると、古い国との関係は、過去は過去でも、記憶にある過去だという。
「僕の父方の祖父母はオランダで生まれてオーストラリアへやってきたんだけど、たぶん戦後で、1940年の後半から1950年の前半だと思うんだ。お祖父ちゃんは三代続くパン屋で、アムステルダムにそう遠くない、ちょっと南に行ったとこに居住していた。4人の子供とともに移住して、僕の父さんはオーストラリアで生まれたんだ。結局9人の子供に恵まれたから、大家族だよね！父さんはオーストラリアでパン屋をやってるから4代目ってことになる。でも、僕は、それもこれでもうお終いだろうねって言ったんだ！」

ほとんどの欧州移民にとって、オーストラリアほど遠く離れたところへの移住は、長距離の通信だけで祖国との連絡を保たなければならないことを意味していた。しかし、ヴァーミューレン一家の連絡のとり方は直接的であった。
「僕の父さんは12歳のときに、家族みんなでオランダに帰ったんだ。1年半を過ごして、父さんは学校にも行ってた。でも、それは、オランダに戻ってまたオーストラリアへ帰るまでの、長い休暇みたいなもんだった。」

今、クリスは年に一回は帰ってくる、自分がチャンピオンだと思い込んでいるレーサーにとっての最高学府とされているところ、アッセンのサーキットに。

WSBKでは、クリスはすでにうらやましいようなアッセンでの結果を残している。
「アッセンでは4回レースをしてるんだけど、3回優勝で1回4位だったね。ま、世界で一番のお気に入りのコースだった、昔のもっと距離のあったコースで、だけどね。今でもアッセンは第二の故郷みたいなもんだし、ほかのヴァーミューレン家からの応援ももらえる。父方のいとこやらほかの親戚もいるし、いつだってアッセンに行くのはステキだね。」

クリスにとってオランダの血筋はとても近い。事実、最近のサッカー選手の選抜のルールによれば、あの有名なオランダ代表のオレンジ色のシャツを着ることだって適ったかも知れないのだ。しかし、ため息をつかないように。
「もし僕がサッカーボールを蹴ってたとしても、オランダは僕にプレーしてほしいと思わなかっただろうね！オランダではクリケットもやってて、この間のワールドカップでよくやってたけど、そっちでも全く望みはないね。バイクに乗るように上手かったらいいけど、どっちもそんなにうまくやれなかったと思うよ。」

クリスがボール競技において技術がない分は、バイクレースで補うことができていることは周知のことだ。ケガと長い回復期間のせいでここ最近のレースでの成績のほとんどはおあずけになってしまっていたが、アッセンにおいてレースの週末にフルで参加するし、この第二の故郷である場所ほど、レースに復帰するのにいい場所もほかにないだろう。

There are no prizes for guessing that the name Vermeulen is originally from the Netherlands, but just how close are Chris’s ties with the country that is about to host his full comeback to racing? See Chris Vermeulen with his Aussie beach shorts, sandals and sunglasses on and he is every inch the Queenslander, ready to go play in the warm waters that lap the eastern coast of Australia.
But dig one level below the surface and Chris’s Dutch heritage is right there, a fact that has increasing relevance as both he and the whole Kawasaki Racing Team crew begin their preparations to head to Assen for the third round of the Superbike World Championship on April 17.
As Chris explains, his connections to ‘the old country’ may be in the past but it is a living past. “My paternal grandparents came over to Australia, I guess just after the war, in the late 1940s or early ‘50s. They were born in Holland. My granddad was a third generation baker and they were based not so far from Amsterdam, just a little towards the south of the city. They moved out to Australia with four kids, and my dad was born in Australia. Eventually they had nine kids so it was a big family! My dad is a baker in Australia, which means he is the fourth generation, but I said that is kind of where it stops!”
For most European immigrants the movement to somewhere as far-flung as Australia means maintaining links with the old country by long distance communication only, but for the Vermeulens, the link was maintained in a very hands-on way. “My dad went back out to Holland, the whole family did, when he was about 12. They did a year and a half back there. My Dad did some schooling, and stayed with the family. It was sort of a long holiday back in the Netherlands before heading back to Australia.”
Now, at least once a year Chris gets to go back to what many consider to be a university course for any racer who fancies himself as a champion - the Circuit van Drenthe in Assen.
In World Superbike guise Chris has got enviable qualifications at Assen already, as he himself explains. “I did four previous races in WSBK at Assen, got three wins and a fourth, “ said Chris. “That was at the older and longer track, which was my just about my favourite place in the world. It is still like a second home for me at Assen and I get a lot of following there from other Vermeulens. Cousins of my Dad, and other relatives, so it is always good to go there.”
The lineage back to the Netherlands for Chris is so close in fact that under current soccer qualification rules Vermeulen could probably be selected to wear the famous orange strip of The Netherlands national football team… But do not hold your breath waiting, as Chris explains. “If you saw me with a soccer ball I do not think The Netherlands would want me to play! They also play cricket in the Netherlands now and they did quite well in the recent Cricket World Cup, but I am pretty hopeless at that too. Just as well I can ride a motorbike because I cannot do much else, I think.”
Everybody knows that what Chris may lack in skill at ball games he can more than make up for in bike racing. Only injury and a long period of recovery have held up Vermeulen’s most recent racing exploits for KRT, but at Assen he is set for a full weekend of racing, and he could not be racing at a better venue than his second ‘home’ circuit.

ま、でも、クリスみたいなのが、あのオレンジ色のユニを着ていても違和感無いですね。立派にオランダ若禿だし。

さておき。
予選までの結果は芳しくないですね。チームメイトからは1.5秒かそこら遅れています。
たぶん、本戦は「目指せ、完走！」でしょう。少しずつ前進していけばいい。一足飛びにはうまくいかないもんです。急がば回れ。大事なことです。

KAWASAKI DAYS 12.04.2010 ～復帰！！～

ブランズハッチでの開発テストを経て、アッセンで復帰することになったクリス。
とうとう、この日がやってまいりました。
実際、本当にレースができるのかは分かりませんが、とりあえず、週末フル参戦予定ということです。
コメントのみ翻訳。

「新しいバイクは、まったくもって好印象だよ。カワサキは素晴らしい仕事をやってくれたし、まだ初期段階ではあるけど、このバイクの進歩を見て、とにかくワクワクしているよ。ニューモデルの一番の違いはシャーシで、方向転換においてバランスと特徴があるね。電子制御でも大きな進歩があった。エンジンはパワフルになったのにスムースだし、戦うのに十分なバイクだね。」

Chris Vermeulen: “My impressions of the new bike are all positive. Kawasaki has done an amazing job with it and I am just excited to look at the development of this bike, even thought it is in the early stages. I think the biggest difference on the new model comes from the chassis, the balance and the character the bike has in turning. Also the electronics are a big step forward. The engine feels smoother even thought it is more powerful, and the whole bike is what we need to compete.”

本当は、クリスのルーツ、オランダについて話している記事があるのですが、長いので明日翻訳します。
フットボール絡みの言及もあり、個人的に楽しいインタでした。
アムステルダムの近くが故郷だそうで、移住は大戦後らしいので、オランダ代表の選手になれる資格もあった？？みたいな話。

とりあえず、私、明日の早朝はシャルケの雄姿を観るので、寝ます。

雲中供養菩薩を描く

震災を受けて、なにか絵を描こうと思っていました。
思いついたのは、平等院の雲中供養菩薩。
震災のこと、日本のこと、そして自分のこと、仏の姿を描くことで落ち着いて考えてみるのもいいかな、と。
おまけに画力の向上も狙いたいな、と。

まず、アナログで描くこと。（使わないで残っているコピックを消費するため。）
下書きをせず、ペンで線を消さずに一気に描くこと。（集中力と観察力の向上のため。）
選り好みせず、写真集の1ページ目から次々描くこと。

という決まりで。

最初の絵はうまくいきませんでした。
でも、最後まで描き切ることが大事。次、頑張ります。

リンゴちゃんの調子も悪いし、しばらくはパソコンで絵を描くことを禁止してしまおうと思ってるんですよ。
そして、描いて描いて描きまくろうと。
一から自分の絵を見直そうと。
とにかく描いていくうちに出てくるものを待ちたいのです。
なんというか、充電したいんだろうな。
自分が空っぽな気分なんだな。
さみしいとか辛いとか、そうゆうことじゃなくて、空っぽなのね。
