1958年か1959年ころ、上野公園あたりで撮った写真です。このクルマは日産のオースティンA50というクルマです。当時、私の祖父と父は自動車の部品メーカーをしており、部品の多くは日産に納入していました。1950年代前半から日産も日本フォードや日本GMのように乗用車を生産したいと考え、英国のブリティッシュモーターズという会社と業務提携を結び、このオースティンのノックダウン生産を始めます。ノックダウン生産とは部品を全部輸入して組み立てるだけのことです。日産はこのオースティンを完全な国産車として生産するために英国の会社と協力して、部品メーカーなども指導したようで、父が良く、日産の人が大きな英国人の技術者を工場につれてきて技術を指導したと言っていました。その後結局1958年の後半についに完全国産車にすることに成功しました。そして、この体験は後の日産の乗用車生産に大きな影響を及ぼす大きな出来事となりました。
父はいつも忙しく、幼い私はなかなか遊んでもらえる機会がありませんでしたが、自分が関わったこのオースチンを駆って上野公園に連れて行ったときに撮った写真です。この写真を見る度、父は写っていませんが、父の多くの想い出が蘇ります。
“Nissan Austin A50 and Me”
The shot was maybe taken in 1958 or 1969 around the Ueno Zoo park.
At that time my grandpa and dad owned an automobile parts supply company which manufactured metal and rubber parts around the doors and windows. Most of products were supplied to Nissan. Nissan wanted to produce passenger cars early 5o's like Japan Ford or Japan General Motors. Austin A50 was the licensed production of The British Motor Company in England. I believe in the early stages it was a knock-down product from England, I mean all parts were imported from UK and Nissan just built up at their plant in Kanagawa. Then Nissan tried to build up with all domestic made parts. Nissan and Austin worked together for that and many parts suppliers worked hard to make up the parts themselves instead of import parts. My dad used to tell that Nissan people brought tall English engineers to his plant and my dad and staff studied under their supervision. Late 1958 Nissan finally accomplished the Austin A50 turned to domestically-made car. Nissan and parts suppliers leaned a lot of lessons from the experience and it was the most dramatic effect on Nissan’s passenger car production systems later.
Though my dad was busy and he couldn’t have enough time to play with me, he maybe took me to the park driving his Austin which he emotionally attached to. This shot always reminds me a lot of good memories of my dad though he wasn't in it.
