彼女自身も驚いていました。多分チェルシー時代の友人を訪問したり、あるいは、この冬ロンドンのクラブへの移籍準備をしているのかもしれない、とのことでしたが、真意のほどは分かりません。

The last we saw of Michael Ballack was a lame man limping off the Wembley pitch after a dreadful challenge in the 2010 FA Cup final against Portsmouth.

Even in a game characterised by instinctive cheating, Ballack's scream as the challenge came in told the story. When he shuffled off the pitch that day, few imagined he was going for good.

'I never had the chance to say goodbye officially, because after that last game we were still talking about a new contract and I thought we would come together,' says Ballack ruefully.

Ballack will allow himself a moment of indulgence. 'It will be good moment for me to have a new and maybe last contact with those fans,' he says.

It has been an odd experience returning to Leverkusen, where he built his reputation. He still uses the same restaurant next to the ground where he dined as a callow 22-year-old, the same owner greets him effusively and the same pictures of a young Ballack adorn the walls.

Yet everything has changed. 'Before, when I came here, I was a talent with a little bit of experience but nothing more,' he says.
Now a 20ft high banner of him adorns the stadium alongside the greats of the club and he represents the experienced professional in the latter stages of his career after a decade as Germany's iconic player and one of the world's best midfielders.

Still, his departure from Chelsea remains a curious affair. It came at a time of relative austerity at the club and the manager, Carlo Ancelotti, seemed to want Ballack to stay.
'That was my feeling, too, when I spoke with the coach,' says Ballack.

And when Frank Lampard became injured last season, it was painfully clear that Chelsea were short of experience as their title challenge imploded.

Ballack reflects: 'In Germany we say, "What interest do I have in what I said yesterday?"
'Sometimes things go differently from the way you think. You have to change your policy. They put more young players in, to change the team a little. That's understandable.'
He appears remarkably phlegmatic about his disposal. But then he grew up quickly as a young man from the old East Germany who had to make his reputation in the west in a supposedly united nation.
'I learned that you had to have elbows to get on in the Bundesliga,' he says. Sharp elbows, he means.
