When I was about 25 years old, I worked with two very good actors. The encounters were brief, but I’ve remembered them both with great admiration. Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton both embodied qualities which one is fogyishly tempted to look at with nostalgia. Along with very considerable talent, they had elegance, glamor, wit, kindness and decency.
I didn’t know at the time that they were married or that they had a son of about 10 who was quietly gestating all the same attributes. And now, 30 years later, the boy has been let loose. He has taken the form of Benedict Cumberbatch.
His parents’ qualities are on rampant display. It’s rare to the point of outlandish to find so many variables in one actor, including features which ought to be incompatible: vulnerability, a sense of danger, a clear intellect, honesty, courage — and a rather alarming energy. I take no pleasure in feeling humbled, but there’s no getting around it.
He must be stopped.

Sherlock and Star Trek actor Benedict Cumberbatch is to play Hamlet on stage next year.
The 37-year-old will star in William Shakespeare's classic tragedy at the Barbican Theatre in London from August to October 2015.
Lyndsey Turner will direct the play for Sonia Friedman Productions.
Friedman said she was "thrilled" to be producing the show, describing its star as "one of the most gifted and exciting actors of his generation".
Best known for his role in BBC One's updated Sherlock Holmes series, Cumberbatch was recently seen in 12 Years a Slave and heard in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
'Right age'
He was last seen on stage in the National Theatre's 2011 production of Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle, in which he shared the roles of Frankenstein and his Monster with Jonny Lee Miller.
Turner was widely praised for her direction of Lucy Kirkwood's play Chimerica, while her revival of Sophie Treadwell's 1928 play Machinal recently ended an acclaimed run on Broadway.
Booking details for the 12-week run will be announced in May.
Cumberbatch revealed last year he would be playing Shakespeare's Danish prince "sometime in autumn on the London stage".
"It's a role I've been interested in for a long time," he told the Daily Telegraph in 2012.
"I don't know if there is such a thing as a right age to play the part, but 36 or 37 seems appropriate to me."

Seen here , photos and cute story from the dog owner @Anthea_Crowe. He is not a professionally trained acting dog. This was his first acting gig. One of the casting crew recruited him for the show, who remembered him from puppy classes. Anthea gives the training credit to her dad. She says that Benedict liked the dog quite a bit and didn’t seem bothered “when the dog was all over him trying to kiss him.” She says Murray “enjoyed his day and gave Benedict plenty of kisses.” Oh, and young Sherlock was Steven Moffat’s son.
Anthea adds that Murray is the sweetest little dog ever, is very loving, and has an obsession with tennis balls!

二話目『The Sign of Three』でのジョンは、元軍医らしさを見せるシーンもあるけれど、メアリーの大きな懐に抱かれちゃって癒しを受けちゃって、すっかり幸せ一杯なんですね。
それは、シアワセもいいし、シャーロックとジョンのやり取りもとても楽しめたのですが、あまりに光に満ち溢れ過ぎていて『The Sign of Four』の事件はどこに出てくるのだろう？状態でした^^。
結局、密室殺人とショルトー大佐、ジョナサン・スモールという名前だけが同じで、辛うじて『The Sign of Four』だ、って確認できた次第。
そして最後の方で『The Sign of Three』が『三人になる兆候→a real baby on the way』という意味だと明かされ、ガ～ン。

LONDON ― The opening episode of the third season of “Sherlock” in the U.K. drew an audience of 9.2 million to the BBC on Wednesday, which repped a 33.8% share.
This was the highest ever audience for a season opener of the detective drama, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
Season one’s launch in 2010 attracted an audience of 7.1 million, which repped a 28.6% share, while season two’s launch in 2012 was seen by 8.8 million, which repped a 31% share.
However, it is not the biggest ever audience for the show. Some 9.78 million watched last season’s finale, which saw Holmes, played by Cumberbatch, plunge to his apparent death.
2.In EMPT, Holmes made an “unnecessarily dramatic” reappearance to let Watson know he was still alive―he posed as a bookseller and visited Watson at his practice. The old DVD salesman that visits John at work, whom John mistakes for Sherlock, is a nod to this disguise. Sherlock also informs John of his return with an unnecessarily dramatic reappearance.
3.One of the thirteen possibilities Sherlock begins to tell John about how he survived was “a system of Japanese wrestling.” In EMPT, Holmes employs the Japanese wrestling style of baritsu to overpower Moriarty and push him off the cliff. (FYI, baritsu does not actually exist, as far as any historian can tell.)

5.Sherlock’s voiceover in THE remarks, “London. It’s like a great cesspool into which all criminals, agents, and drifters are irresistibly drained.” In A Study in Scarlet, Watson describes London as “that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers are irresistibly drained.”

7.Sherlock and Mycroft’s dual deduction of the beanie a client left at Baker Street is comparable to a deduction Holmes makes of a client’s hat in The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.
8.In TEH, a client visits Sherlock complaining that her lover/pen pal’s letters have suddenly stopped. Sherlock deduces that the pen pal was actually her stepfather, who hoped that by breaking his stepdaughter’s heart she would never love again, and he could keep her (and her income) at home. This is roughly the plot of A Case of Identity.

9.Mary figures out that the anonymous texts she receives are a skip code, in which only every third word is read. A code like this is vital to the case in The Gloria Scott.
11.In the bomb/carriage in TEH, John tells Sherlock, “You were the best and the wisest man that I’ve ever known.” This is a reference to the last line in The Final Problem.
“John is still, he’s stoical, he’s very watchful, he’s very very strong-willed, a strong-minded person, he’s not easily flappable.
You know he’s an alpha male, he saves lives and can kill people; like if it wasn’t for Sherlock he’d be the most impressive man in the room, you know because he’s knocking about with someone who’s even more fucking alpha than he is. All of which is interesting to play because you’re playing someone who is very much their own man, they’re very strong.
He doesn’t do a lot of vocal flourishes, he doesn’t do a lot of showing off, it’s just he’s still in a way that I envy about some men. He’s got a real strength to him.”

I said at the time that it wasn't very likely. In fact, I think I said it was impossible. And he told me that it might be improbable but nothing's impossible.
In WWII the phrase “Vatican Cameos” was used when a person who was not in the British army came before the general, or other high up ranks, as a signal to the other officers that the person was armed.
So when Sherlock says “Vatican Cameos” to warn John that the safe has a gun in it, it’s not something that they’ve set up as a code word- It’s a code Sherlock knew John would know- being a soldier!
'Vatican Cameos' is a phrase used in BBC's Sherlock when Sherlock is about to open Irene Adler's safe. The phrase first originated in World War 2. It was used when a non-military person, who was armed (gun or knife) entered a British military base. The phrase was a signal for everyone duck out of the line of fire. Sherlock knew that John, being a military man, would recognise this phrase and duck out of the way of the gun in the safe.

This is one of the most important moments, to me. Where we start to understand and feel for John even more than we already have been.
Ship it or don’t ship it, it doesn’t matter. That’s not what they’re implying, here. John and Sherlock - they are (or rather, were, since he thinks Sherlock is dead) best friends.
There was this unspoken connection between them..but that’s just it. It was unspoken. John never told Sherlock out loud how much he cared for him, he never did. It was implied and they both understood it, but he never really looked Sherlock in the face and said, “I care so much about you.” Or “You’re my best friend.” Nothing like that was ever said out loud.
His best friend is dead, and he never told him how much he cares. He held it back, probably thought Sherlock would find him ridiculous. Roll his eyes. Call him sentimental. So, he never got to say it.
And that? That’s what breaks my heart. Call it love, call it friendship, call it whatever you want to.
The point here is that John cares so much. And Sherlock never knew.
