刀剣博物館は駅でいうと両国。
ちょうど本場所中。
敷地は旧安田庭園の中という素晴らしい立地。
3層のスケールは歴史的な公園にも調和しています。1階はレクチャー室、カフェなどのパブリックな用途。2階は館長室や学芸員室、収蔵庫など。展示室は3階にコンパクトに収まっています。
たまたま副所長のＷさんがおられて、教えてくれたのが日本の刀剣美術の大恩人のお二人。
戦後、進駐軍の方針で刀剣が日本人の手から離れようとしていたときに、美術作品としての価値を認めさせたのがこのお二人。もちろんそれ以外の面でも刀剣美術界で様々に活躍された方のようですが、佐藤先生は鶴岡、本間先生はその名からご推察の通り酒田の出身。そして今の会長（博物館館長）は旧荘内藩主酒井忠久氏。鶴岡の致道博物館で刀剣をもう一度じっくり拝見する必要があります。

Visited the Japanese Sword Museum designed by architect Fumihiko Maki.
It is located in Yasuda Teien, a Japanese traditional garden famous for its beautiful seneries.
Walking through the garden I found the building in good proportion to the beautiful surroundings.
And in the museum, I felt, as usual, a sense of elegance coming out of good proportions, carefully selected materials and refinement of details.
Mr.Wakatsuki, a senior associate of Maki's office, taught me that two portrait busts set in the entrance hall were for two leading persons of Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords and they were both born in Shonai region. The present director of the museum is Mr. Sakai, a descendant of a feudal lord of Shonai region. I realized Shonai people made a great contribution in the field of art sword.
