China will sacrifice short-term economic growth to stave off a financial crisis, economists at Nomura have claimed.

The government is likely to tighten monetary policy this year in an effort to alleviate the risk of a financial disaster and avert a so-called hard landing of the economy, which is the world's second-largest, the bank's experts said.

That would result in slower growth, with gross domestic product averaging 7.3pc in the second half of 2013 – compared with consensus estimates of 8 pc over the course of this year - they added.

"The Chinese government has in recent months sent a number of unusually strong signals that it is concerned about financial risks in the economy," the Nomura economists said.

The cautious assessment from Nomura came as China re-appointed Zhou Xiaochuan, 65, as governor of its central bank, in what was a widely-expected move.
