『君が代』の起源はイギリスだ、とウリナラのような事を言っていますが、まあ、内容的には別にOffendされる必要もなく………イギリスと日本の仲は、実はアメリカと日本の仲よりも古くて深いのよ、なんて事は、今更言われなくともわかっているわけで、ワタクシのようなもともとアングロファイルな人間としては、「そうか、そりゃあ良かったね」で済むわけですよ。

最初の半分がなければ、ね。

なんだ、お前等、イギリスのパブリックスクールの方がもっと厳しい教育してるだろうが。東京都が、国が食わしてやってる教師と生徒に「国歌の時は起立して歌いなさい」というのは当然以外の何物でもないだろう。いやなら高い金出して私立行けよ。もっとも、私立の方がビシッとしてるんでないか？

はっはっはっ、こういうところはイギリスも日本も似たり寄ったりかもしらんが。

そりゃあね、あんた達の「Department of Education & Science」、元DES教育省ってのは、センセー連中の労組の為に作って、奴等の給料がパブリック・スクールの優秀なセンセー方のそれに近付くようにつくり、DESの2,000人をこす官僚の飯の種として作っただけで、
生徒も親もどうでもいいさ、俺達の子供はパブリック・スクール入れるもんね
ってなわけだったんだろうが。そんな馬鹿政策でシングルマザーの山を作り、少年犯罪やら少年ホームレスを大量生産した国から云々言われる筋合いはこれっぽちもない。

1. Briton who gave Japan its anthem

Nothing divides Japan, a country that sees social harmony as a supreme public virtue, more bitterly than its national anthem.

Nationalists force the song into Japanese public life, demanding that Kimi Ga Yo (His Majesty's Reign) be played at every school ceremony. Tokyo's local government insists that teachers stand and sing what is essentially a hymn to the emperor or face fines and suspension.

But a large minority associate the tune with the militarism and deification of the emperor that drove Japan to the catastrophe of the Second World War.
しかし、大部分のマイノリティは、この曲を軍国主義と、日本を第二次世界大戦の破滅へと追いやった天皇の神聖視を、関連付けている。

Even Emperor Akihito stepped into the debate last year, saying that it was "not desirable" that respect for the anthem be imposed on reluctant Japanese.
昭仁天皇でさえ、国歌への尊敬を、そうしたくない日本人へ課す事は「望ましくない」、と言って昨年この論争に踏み込んだ。

Almost completely forgotten, however, is that the origins of this contentious piece of music can be traced back to John William Fenton, bandmaster of Britain's 10th Foot Regt, 1st Bn.
しかしながら、ほぼ完全に忘れ去られている事実は、この人騒がせな曲の起源が、第十歩兵連隊第一大隊の楽長であったジョン・ウィリアム・フェントンにまで遡る事が出来る、という事だ。

Fenton arrived in Japan in 1868, the year Japanese modernisers overthrew the medieval shogunate and replaced it with a constitutional monarchy.
フェントンは、日本の近代主義者達が中世の幕政を倒し、立憲君主制と挿げ替えた1868年に、日本に到着した。

His regiment, later renamed the Royal Lincolnshire Regt, had come to protect the small foreign community in Yokohama from samurai diehards bitterly opposed to the foreigners' presence on their soil.

During his three-year stay Fenton established Japan's first military brass band, ordering the instruments from London and composing what was intended as its first national anthem.

Historians record that 30 cadets from Satsuma, in Japan's far west, were staying a short walk from the park where Fenton's band rehearsed and performed. Fenton also became the instructor for the Japanese group, whose average age was 19.

Fenton also convinced the Japanese that to become a modern nation state they needed a national anthem. He talked passionately to his pupils about the importance of God Save the Queen in British life and urged them to find a suitable poem in Japanese, which he would set to music.

Captain Iwao Oyama chose a 10th-century poem that prayed for the longevity of the "Lord", usually assumed to be the emperor.
オオヤマ・イワオ隊長は、通常天皇と考えられる『我が君』の長寿を祈る10世紀の詩を選んだ。

The excited Japanese pressured Fenton to complete the score in less than three weeks and the band had just days to rehearse before its debut performance in front of the emperor in Tokyo in 1870.
喜び勇んだ日本人はフェントンに楽譜を3週間以内で完成させるよう迫り、1870年に東京で天皇の前で初演奏を行うまで、楽隊はリハーサルにはほんの数日しかなかった。

Ten years later Japan replaced Fenton's composition with one by a Japanese composer. This version, still used today, was commissioned by one of Fenton's pupils and retains the same words.
10年後、日本はフェントンの作曲を日本の作曲家の曲に替えた。
今日も使われているこのバージョンは、フェントンの生徒の一人によって依頼され、歌詞はそのまま残した。

Fenton's regiment left Japan in 1871 but he stayed for a further six years as a bandmaster with the newly formed Japanese navy and then the band of the imperial court.
フェントンの連帯は1871年に日本を去ったが、彼は更に6年間、新たに結成された日本海軍と、その後は皇室の楽隊の楽長として滞在した。

His wife, Annie Maria, died in 1871 aged 40. Her grave is in Yokohama Foreigners' Cemetery. Fenton's fate is unknown.

4. Coffee 'gives more antioxidants than fruit and veg'

Coffee is likely to contribute far more antioxidants to the British diet than fruit and vegetables.
コーヒーはイギリス人の食生活にフルーツや野菜よりも更に抗酸化物を提供してくれるようだ。

The evidence comes from the United States where scientists measured the antioxidant content of more than 100 different food items, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices, oils and beverages. The information was combined with US Department of Agriculture data on the contribution of each item to the average American's diet.

The findings in the US probably reflect a similar trend in the UK, where people drink about 70 million cups of coffee each day. Antioxidants help to rid the body of harmful free radicals, destructive molecules that damage cells and DNA. They have been linked to health benefits, including protection against heart disease and cancer.

Studies have associated coffee drinking with a reduced risk of liver and colon cancer, type two diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.

But Prof Vinson recommended that people drink only one or two cups a day. He said it was important not to ignore the benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables. "Unfortunately, consumers are still not eating enough fruits and vegetables, which are better for you from an overall nutritional point of view due to their higher content of vitamins, minerals and fibre," said Prof Vinson.

Dates were found to be the richest source of antioxidants, but since so few were eaten by Americans, they only contributed a small amount of antioxidants to the average diet.
デーツは抗酸化物質が最も豊富であると発見されてたが、アメリカでは殆ど食べられていない為、平均的食事の中ではほんの僅かな抗酸化物しか提供していない事になる。

2. Migrating flocks 'will bring bird flu to Britain'

Migrating birds will eventually carry bird flu from Asia to Britain, the head of the British Veterinary Association said yesterday.
渡り鳥は最終的に鳥インフルエンザをアジアからイギリスへ運び込むだろう、とイギリス獣医協会（BVA）会長が昨日語った。

Bob McCracken, president of the BVA, said: "Wild birds that have migratory pathways over Europe and the UK will become infected. It is inevitable that bird flu will be carried to this country."
BVA会長のボブ・マクラッケンはこう語った。
「ヨーロッパとイギリスを越す航路を渡る野鳥が感染するだろう。鳥インフルエンザがこの国へ持ち込まれるという事態は避けられない」。

But after a day-long debate, European Union experts said the immediate risk of sick birds reaching Europe and infecting flocks was "probably remote or low," though it varied from region to region in the EU.

The veterinary officers - from all 25 European Union national governments and the European Commission - held the emergency summit in Brussels to discuss an avian influenza outbreak now making its way west across Asia, after recently reaching Siberia and the Ural mountains in Russia.

They stopped short of endorsing the measures taken this week in Holland, where farmers with free range or outdoor flocks were being ordered to shut all birds indoors.

The Chief Veterinary Officer, Debbie Reynolds, who represented Britain at the meeting, said: "The experts concluded that it would not be proportionate for the current risk of disease to introduce a general ban on keeping poultry outdoors. The risk of the virus spreading into the European Union via migrating birds is remote or low."

Dutch officials have not forgotten an outbreak of another strain of bird flu that led to the destruction of 30 million chickens in 1999-2000, at an estimated cost of ￡100 million.

The virulent strain of bird flu involved in the latest outbreak, H5N1, has been endemic in south-east Asia and China for two years already. It has now killed more than 14,000 birds in Russia, and prompted the culling of 130,000 domestic birds. The Russian flu appears to be a less infectious Chinese sub-variety, and not identical to that found in South East Asia.

The H5N1 strain has shown itself capable of jumping the "species gap" to humans, and has killed more than 60 people since 2003, most of them in Vietnam. It is extremely dangerous to humans once caught, killing between half and a third of all those sickened.

But, crucially, the H5N1 strain is not very contagious, spreading poorly if at all between humans. Most of those infected are believed to have been sickened by close contact with diseased birds, in regions where millions live in close contact with live poultry.

EU vets meeting in Brussels discussed only the chance that bird flu could spread to birds in Europe, not humans. A senior EU official was at pains to draw a clear distinction between the chance of poultry falling sick in Europe, which could be a commercial catastrophe, and the doomsday scenario of the virus mutating into a new form of flu that could spread quickly between humans - the so called "global pandemic" scenario.

The official said: "We are very far from a risk of the infection of humans by migratory birds from Asia. The potential risk is that migratory birds will bring the infection to domestic poultry in Europe. Once that happens, the risk for humans is increased."
この高官はこう言った。
「アジアから来た渡り鳥によって我々が感染する危険は程遠い。予想しうる危険性とは、渡り鳥がヨーロッパの家禽を感染させる事だ。これが一度起こってしまえば、人間へのリスクは増大する」。

In a statement, the EU expert group said they lacked information about the extent to which wild birds were to blame.

The EU has asked member states to step up sampling of migrating wildfowl along high-risk migration routes. They have also asked customs and border police agencies to enforce strictly an import ban on poultry meat and feathers from infected areas of Asia.
EUはメンバー各国に、リスクの高いルートを渡る渡り鳥のサンプル収集を促進するよう依頼した。また、税関及び国境警備にも、アジアの感染地域から鶏肉や羽の輸入禁止措置を厳しく実施するよう要請した。

Birds from Siberia migrate south mainly to southern Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania.

何十人もの、多くは中国からやってきたギャング容疑者達は、花嫁花婿はFBI捜査官だと発見して逮捕される為だけに、ニュージャージーの或る結婚式に到着した。金文字の招待状は客人達にホテル宿泊費と、大西洋の港に浮かぶ「ロイヤル・チャーム」と名づけられたヨットで行われる披露宴への足代の提供を約束していた。

無料リムジンが待機していたのは、結婚式用の派手な格好の客人達を留置所に連れて行く為だけではなかった。FBIとカナダ騎馬警官隊員に率いられた作戦は、アメリカ中で約100名、ニュージャージーでは57名を逮捕した。

この他、ボルチモア、シカゴ、シンシナティ、ラスベガス、ニューヨーク、ニューワーク、フィラデルフィア、そしてサンディエゴでも逮捕されている。拘留者達は膨大な数の武器、偽バイアグラ、エクスタシー、そして偽ドル札をアメリカに密輸入した罪で起訴されている。

蜜輸入品の販売に熱心な取引相手のフリをしていた覆面FBI捜査官達は、何年もかけてアジアのギャング達と関係を築いてきた。この「カップル」は、密輸入者をアメリカにおびき寄せる為に派手な結婚式は最高の方法だ、と決断した。

連邦弁護士のクリストファー・クリスティーはこう語った。
「招待状が配布され、式の日取りが発表され、返事が世界中のあちこちから届いた」。
「純金のロレックスを一組持ってきているゲストもいた」
と、FBI捜査官レスリー・ワイザーが言った。

日曜日の彼等の逮捕後、裁判官の前に連れて来られたゲストの中には未だ結婚式用の服装のままのが何人かおり、お互いに「何が起こったんだ？」と尋ね合っていた、とニュージャージーはカムデンの町の、驚いた裁判所職員達は語った。

Without them, I am jolly well sure that we should have been colonised by brutal British and other Westerners or Russians, and like Indonesia there might have been nearly a million Japanese killed for independence.

Without admitting your bloody atrocity, which has been well documented but widely published or talked about, how dare you spitting out so many lies about Japan.

2. Film praises 'beautiful lives' of kamikazes

東京都の問題児都知事が、日本の神風特攻隊の「美しくも悲しい」人生を讃える映画の脚本を執筆した。

耳障りで喧しいナショナリストの石原慎太郎はまた、所謂「神風の母」トリハマ・トメの目を通して見た「I Go to Die For Nothing But You（俺は、君のためにこそ死ににいく）」のプロデューサーも務めている。

1992年に亡くなったトリハマ夫人は神風訓練生用の食堂を経営しており、多くのパイロット達が特攻に赴く前に最後の抱擁を与えた人物だ。

石原氏によれば、彼の映画は神風を「正当化」するものではない、という。しかし、天皇の為に命を捧げた人々のロマンチックな神話を育もうとしているのは確実だ。

日本は戦争罪悪感にがっちりと捉えられており、日本が原因となった苦しみに対して謝罪したとはいえ、第二次世界大戦の自爆攻撃者達の崇拝主義は強くなっている。

西側諸国では気違い（狂信者）と見られているとはいえ、彼等は日本では若く、無垢で、国を戦争へ追いやった将軍や政治家とは全く違ったものとして覚えられている。

日本の左翼主義者でさえ、彼等を犠牲になれという洗脳と軍の苛めと周囲のプレッシャーの犠牲者として、神風批判は避けている。約4,000名のパイロットがアメリカの軍艦に突っ込もうとして、殆ど成功する事もなく、死んだ。

石原氏の映画は、日本の戦時中の残虐行為の被害者達に、更なる怒りをもたらすだろう。彼等は1910年の日韓併合に合意したと主張して、彼は既に朝鮮人を怒らせている。

2000年に彼は、東京で地震が起こったら彼等は略奪に走るだろうと言って、日本の非日系アジア人を誹謗中傷した。

政治家になる前、石原氏はデビュー作で1955年に日本の最高文学賞を受賞した作家だった。彼は1999年に東京都知事になって以来、驚くべきペースで書き続けている。
