Whether or not Eliot Spitzer’s strong showing in recent polls will translate to votes come November, the former governor’s success following his prostitution scandal ― as a cable news pundit and, today, as a candidate for New York City comptroller ― mark a pretty impressive return to public life. But Melissa Petro, a former sex worker who lost a tenured teaching position after she wrote publicly about her past line of work, doesn’t see that many second chances for women who, like herself, are on the other end of such scandals.

In fact, she says it can be nearly impossible for some women to transition from sex work to other careers, thanks to the stigma against sex workers and a societal double standard that judges men who pay women for sex less harshly than the women who get paid for sex.

In fall of 2010, after I published an op-ed on The Huffington Post under my real name arguing that not all sex workers were victims of trafficking or under the control of a pimp (I certainly wasn’t), I was abruptly sent to the “rubber room,” an administrative office turned holding cell for New York City’s unwanted educators. Four years after transitioning out of prostitution, winning a coveted position as a New York City Teaching Fellow, earning my master’s degree in education, and giving lessons on art and creative writing at a struggling elementary school in the South Bronx, I sat in that drab room until the City could find a way to fire me…

　男性が買春していたと暴露されても、非難はされるものの、社会復帰はできるが、女性が売春していたことを暴露される、あるいは自ら暴露すると、社会は受け入れてくれないことが多い。売春婦という汚名を着せられると、社会は男性と女性とで二重基準を使って、女性に不公平に評価しているのだ、と。

　因みに、人身売買されて売春しているとは限らない、というのは、慰安婦でも同じでしょうね。

War “Games” blunder compounds Barrier Reef crisis

Over the weekend, two US warplanes dropped bombs in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The AV-8B Harriers were engaged in a live fire mission during the biennial Talisman Sabre joint US/Australian military exercises concentrated at the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area in Queensland. The aircrafts’ mission was cancelled and they were low on fuel, so the decision was taken to jettison the bombs into the Park. There has been strong opposition to the massive military exercises since their inception in 2005 and one of the issues raised by local communities was the threat to the precious World Heritage area. State and federal governments dismissed their protests as alarmist. The bombing incident is a powerful reminder of the casual attitude of Australian governments to the Reef and the environment more generally. It underscores the huge cost Australians are paying for the US alliance and the system of corporate rule it enforces.

　東京都内で２０１２年にあった万引で、６５歳以上の高齢者の摘発者数が１９歳以下の少年を上回ったことが７日、警視庁の調査で分かった。詳細な統計が残る１９８９年以降初めて。高齢者による万引の摘発件数は年々増加傾向にあり、孤独感や生活困窮などが背景にあるとみられる。

　警視庁は「調査結果を基に、関係機関と連携して高齢者の万引を防ぐための対策を実施していきたい」としている。

　警視庁によると、６５歳以上の摘発者数は９９年が３３６人で全体の６・０％だったが、１２年には３３２１人となり、２４・５％を占めた。

都内の万引き 高齢者が少年上回る
去年、東京都内で万引きで検挙・補導された人のうち、６５歳以上の高齢者の数は初めて少年の数を上回り、警視庁は貧困や社会からの孤立が背景にあるとみて、自治体などと連携し対策を進めることにしています。

警視庁によりますと、去年、東京都内で万引きをして検挙や補導された人はおよそ１万３５００人で、前の年より率にしておよそ８％減りました。
しかし、このうち６５歳以上の高齢者は、前の年より５５人増えて３３２１人と全体の２４．５％を占め、警視庁が統計を取り始めた平成元年以降、初めて２０歳未満の少年の割合、２３．６％を上回りました。
検挙された高齢者の５５％が以前も検挙されたことがある再犯者で、前の年より６ポイント高く、年々再犯の傾向が強まっているということです。
また、警視庁が検挙された高齢者およそ５００人を対象に調査したところ、盗んだ品物の７０％が食料品で、動機は「生活に困っていた」と答えた人が最も多くなりました。
生活環境を尋ねた質問では、相談できる家族や友人がいない、趣味などの生きがいがないといった回答が目立ち、社会から孤立している状況が浮き彫りになっているということです。
警視庁は自治体や福祉事務所と連携し、高齢者の居場所作りなどの対策を進めることにしています

　共同通信社が参院選直後の２２、２３両日に実施した全国緊急電話世論調査によると、安倍内閣の支持率は５６・２％で、前回６月調査の６８・０％から１１・８ポイント急落した。不支持率は３１・７％で、前回（１６・３％）からほぼ倍増した。
　民主党が参院選で惨敗したことを踏まえ、６８・８％が野党の「再編が必要」と回答。「再編は必要ない」とした２２・７％を大きく上回った。
　自民党が参院選で圧勝し、衆参両院のねじれが解消した結果については「よかった」が３９・８％、「よくなかった」が１７・８％で、「どちらともいえない」は４２・０％だった。

　全国チェーンの喫茶店、カフェ・ベローチェで計約８年半アルバイトをしてきた千葉市の女性（２９）が２３日、契約の打ち切り（雇い止め）は不当だとして、運営会社のシャノアールを相手に、雇用継続の確認と２００万円の損害賠償を求め東京地裁に提訴。

　同社の担当者は「内容が分からずコメントできない」としている。

　訴状によると、女性は０３年９月から千葉市の店でアルバイトとして勤務。一時期離職したが、３か月ごとの更新を３０回以上、繰り返した。同社は１２年３月に「契約更新は１５回が上限、通算４年の勤務で契約満了」とのルールをアルバイトに通知。ことし６月に雇い止めになったとしている。

The combined efforts have been successful. The number of homeless has dropped to 500 in the City of Miami, 351 of them downtown. But those numbers have remained unchanged for several years. Those left on the streets are typically the “chronic homeless” who refuse help, due often to mental illness or long-term drug abuse.

Benjamin Waxman, a volunteer lawyer for the ACLU, says the city is now worried about its cosmetic appearance.

“I think what bothers [the city] is their presence, because they are trying to project the image of Miami as a center of international travel and business, and they see the homeless as interfering with their intentions,” said Waxman.

It’s true: 30 really is the new 20. A study by Friends Reunited, a British social-networking site, found that 70% of respondents over the age of 40 claimed they were not truly happy until they reached 33.

“The age of 33 is enough time to have shaken off childhood naiveté and the wild scheming of teenaged years without losing the energy and enthusiasm of youth,” psychologist Donna Dawson said in the survey’s findings. “By this age innocence has been lost, but our sense of reality is mixed with a strong sense of hope, a ‘can do’ spirit, and a healthy belief in our own talents and abilities.”

　当選数では、圧勝とは言っても、自民党が特にいいと思っているわけではない、ということだろう。

　もっとも、野党のなかには、自民党の派閥程度の政党も多いから、野党でもっと当選数が多くても、政策に大きな変化があったかどうかはわからない。

　いずれにせよ、共食いして、自民党に対峙できなかった。

Young Americans seeking full-time employment tend to find their options limited to two paths: one of low-status, low-paying temp jobs emblematic of poverty; another of high-status, low-paying temp jobs emblematic of wealth. America is not only a nation of temporary employees - the Walmart worker on a fixed-day contract, the immigrant struggling for a day's pay in a makeshift "temp town" - but of temporary jobs: intern , adjunct , fellow.


On July 20, 2013, the journalist Helen Thomas died at age 92. Thomas was a seminal Washington reporter who covered every president since John F. Kennedy, but she came from humble means. Her father, an immigrant from Lebanon, was illiterate, but he encouraged her to get an education. She earned a BA in English from Wayne State University in her native Detroit. She moved to Washington DC and worked as a waitress - one could once afford to live in DC on a waitress's salary - and then got a clerical job at the Washington Daily News, which led to a job with United Press Service.

Helen Thomas worked her way up from the bottom. She did not buy her opportunities, because exorbitant journalism schools and unpaid internships did not exist. Her time in the service industry was not perceived as indicative of her abilities or her future path.

Russian official slams US for turning down Moscow's extradition requests

The US is pressuring Russia to hand over NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to face espionage charges. However, it routinely denies Russian requests to hand over suspected criminals living in America.

“Law agencies asked the US on many occasions to extradite wanted criminals through Interpol channels, but those requests were neither met nor even responded to,” spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry Andrey Pilipchuk said on Monday.

He named Ilyas Akhmadov and Tamaz Nalbandov as examples of people living in the US, who Russia unsuccessfully tried to get for prosecution.

Akhmadov is a former official of the short-lived ‘government of Ichkeria’ an entity which wanted to form a sovereign Islamist state in the territory of the Russian Republic of Chechnya. He is wanted in Russia over his connection to terrorist acts committed by Chechen insurgents.

In 1999 Akhmadov was appointed ‘Foreign Minister of Ichkeria’, and toured western countries to rally support for his cause. After Moscow re-established control over Chechnya, he settled in the US and sought political asylum there. He received it in 2004 despite objections from the US Department of Homeland Security.

Nalbandov is wanted in Russia for alleged abduction and extortion. He has been living in the US since 2000, where he received a residence permit in 2002.

「おかわり、進んで手上げた娘」　女児両親がメッセ―ジ

２３日午前、亡くなった女児の両親が寄せたメッセージを、検討会委員らの前で調布市教育委員会の職員が泣きながら代読した。「報告書の完成にあたって」と題したメッセージの全文は次の通り。

　先頃、娘の新盆を迎えました。

　送り火に乗って娘の精霊がまた天に戻って行くのを感じ、耐え難い寂しさをひしひしと感じるとともに、失われた命に対する悲しみを新たにする日々です。

　お盆に戻ってきた娘に会いに、クラスメートたちが自宅に訪れてくれました。

　ひとしきり思い出話をした後、ひとりの女の子が、娘の死因となった「おかわり」の理由について教えてくれました。

　とりわけおいしくないと子どもたちに不人気だったその日の献立に、おかわりを勧める呼びかけに手を挙げる子はほとんどなかった中、滅多におかわりを希望しない娘が進んで手を上げたのだそうです。

　給食後、不思議に思ったその女の子が、「どうしておかわりをしたの？」と尋ねると、娘は「給食の完食記録に貢献したかったから」と答えたそうです。

　女の子は、泣きながらそう私たちに教えてくれました。

　クラスでは、給食の残菜をゼロにする「給食完食」を日々の目標にしていました。みんなと同じ物が食べられない日も多い中、何かできることがあれば周囲の役に立ちたい――家族が常日頃目にしていた、娘の物事すべてに対する前向きな姿勢、いつも誰かの役に立つ人でいたいという思いが、このような結果を引き起こす事になろうとは。

　残念でなりませんが、今は娘の強い遺志がこの報告書に反映されていると信じたく思います。今後はこれが関係各位によって十分認識され、万全に現場の施策に活かされ、さらに継続して改善されて行くであろうことを、引き続き娘と共に見守りたいと考えます。

Alone in all that sun and snow, absorbing energy from the sky and mountains, I let my body breathe quietly. The freedom and whiteness of the snow and mountains produced a kind of ecstasy. And the special pleasure I found skiing in this paradise made me think about the possibilities of my body, my sensuality. And I asked myself, “Sophie, is your se xual life so very stimulating, actually?” And my answer was, “No.” I realized that even when I took pleasure, I was not ecstatic with my se xual life. In fact, I seemed to be going through the motions of lovemaking because, I thought, that’s what everybody did. I decided to take a break, to recover a true desire.





We are liars, poor liars trying to mystify one another. Perhaps French people are especially big liars. At the very least, we are full of contradictions. If you visit Paris, you will notice that we are very thin, even if we are the country of bread and cheese. We are also very se xy, but maybe it’s only a show to save our reputation.

By giving up se x, I abandoned all this pretense. During the 12 years I didn’t have s ex, I learned so much. About my body, the role of art in eroticism, the power of dreams, the softness of clothes, the refuge and the importance of elegance. That I can take more pleasure while watching Robert Redford shampooing Meryl Streep’s hair in “Out of Africa” than being in a bed with a man. Sometimes I took pleasure just by staring at men’s necks. Sometimes, just by listening to a voice. It was libido, trust me.
