Grandson of civil rights leader lauded by Obama sues over alleged harassment
Ann Nixon Cooper's grandson Michael says he's been the victim of racial taunts and slurs at the hands of a former employer
Share 4

Ed Pilkington in New York

guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 27 June 2012

The lawsuit alleges that while he was working as a salesman of car parts at M&S Auto, he was frequently denigrated with racial slurs. One of his supervisors called him "black daddy" and Dan – an acronym for "dumb ass nigger".

At other times he was called "stupid nigger" and "dumb fucking nigger". The owner of the scrap yard, Michael Bell, was alleged to have called him "my nigger", and shouted at him "get [your] fucking ass back down the hill" – a reference to the parts area of the yard.

Cooper's lawsuit, first reported by Wonkette, includes 14 counts of alleged discrimination and harassment. The complaints range from race discrimination to intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence.

Most disturbingly, court documents allege how one of his white co-workers was paid extra money on top of his wages specifically to harass Cooper. Patrick Pearson recalls in an affidavit lodged with the court a telephone conversation he had with Bell. "He told me to harass Mr Cooper, call him a nigger and treat him bad so Mr Bell could get rid of him. He told me he would pay me $500 per week extra to do this. I asked Mr Bell what if I say 'no', and Mr Bell told me I wouldn't have a job. Because I needed my job, I did treat Mr Cooper badly."

That involved calling him once a "dumb nigger", and telling Cooper that when he saw a white man coming he was supposed not to show his teeth.

The lawsuit claims that the discrimination was not just verbal. At one point, when the business was said to be struggling, Bell cut the wages of all his workers by 10% – except Cooper, who had his money cut by 15%.
Asked by Cooper's lawyers whether he had any explanation for why he cut their client's pay more than anyone else, Bell replied: "No."

Then in August 2008, the day Cooper returned from sick leave having had a bout of West Nile virus, he was dismissed without explanation and replaced by a white worker.

The readers' editor on… problems with illustrating a feature on poverty
There is more than one issue here, a question of identification as well as ethnicity

Poverty is not just likely to make a person hungry and cold; among other things it can stigmatise too. That's why illustrating a series of in-depth features in the Guardian on its causes was always going to require special care.

The focus of the series was a group of seven million adults who are all in work but still on the breadline, living in extreme financial stress. The premise was that this group's existence has been lost to some extent in politicians' emphasis on the "squeezed middle".

The series began on 19 June with a front-page story and two pages inside. On these two pages was a large picture of a mother with photos of her two children, when they were younger, with a much smaller "cutout" of another family of four. These pictures accompanied three family case histories – including the two pictured – that the Guardian intends to follow over the next 12 months with the Resolution Foundation, to see how they cope in their straitened circumstances.

The following day there was a smaller story on the front and again a double-page spread inside. These articles concentrated on how many of the children of these families go to school hungry. As a result, some teachers are taking food for pupils into school, and many of the children attend school breakfast clubs where they receive free or subsidised food.

Again there were two photographs on the inside pages. The larger one, which dominated the pages, was of three children sitting at a table at a breakfast club in a school in Brixton. The smaller picture was of a child at a breakfast club talking to Carmel McConnell, the CEO of Magic Breakfast, a charity that provides breakfast in 200 schools.

On the first day the photos depicted white people and on the second day all the children illustrating the articles, including those on the website, were African-Caribbean. This caused concern among some readers. One wrote: "I was very disappointed to see the image used was a young African-Caribbean school girl … They make up less than 2% of the population and there are far more white children being brought up in poverty."

31 victims identified in widening Air Force sex scandal
By Chris Lawrence, CNN
June 29, 2012 --

(CNN) -- The U.S. Air Force has now identified at least 31 women as victims in a growing sex scandal, a four-star general said Thursday, and there might be more. The Air Force is broadening its investigation to "actively seek any others that may have been affected by this," Gen. Edward Rice, the commander of Air Force Training, said.
"We are taking a comprehensive look not only at the cases that we know, but trying to do the best we can to assess whether or not there are other cases out there," Rice told reporters at the Pentagon.

The Pentagon estimates 19,000 sexual assaults occur each year. But only 14% of these crimes are actually reported. And less than 8% go to a court-martial.

US Troops Suicide Rate Highest In Decade
8:28pm UK, Friday 08 June 2012

By Greg Milam, US correspondent
The suicide rate among American troops has reached its highest level for a decade - with an average of nearly one a day this year.

The 154 suicides in the first 155 days of the year eclipses the number of US forces killed in action in Afghanistan in the same period.

The numbers have shocked the US military, which had been expecting them to fall after levelling off in 2010 and 2011.

Jackie Garrick, head of the Pentagon's new Defence Suicide Prevention Office, said: "We are very concerned at this point that we are seeing a high number of suicides at a point in time where we were expecting to see a lower number."

Officials believe the weak US economy may be playing a part as thousands of American troops head home from Afghanistan.

They say other explanations include combat exposure, post-traumatic stress and the misuse of prescription medications.

Army statistics have revealed that soldiers with multiple combat tours are at greater risk of taking their own lives.

But a substantial proportion of army suicides are committed by soldiers who were never deployed.

Kim Ruocco, whose husband, marine helicopter pilot Major John Ruocco hanged himself in 2005, said he was unable to bring himself to go for help.

She said: "He was so afraid of how people would view him once he went for help.

"He thought that people would think he was weak, that people would think he was just trying to get out of redeploying or trying to get out of service, or that he just couldn't hack it - when, in reality, he was sick.

"He had suffered injury in combat and he had also suffered from depression and let it go untreated for years. And because of that, he's dead today."

Critics say the US military is still not doing enough to recognise the problem.

I've seen this type of article in the NY times before. In this article, it's Ronan Sato, the graduate of oxford. In a previous article, it was a student from singapore who applied for but didnt get a job in Japan. Somehow we are supposed to imagine that these guys are the most ultimate awesome potential catches and how could the Japanese be so crazy as to not want to hire them. These are just individual people. The case has not been convincingly made based on a few blurbed out factoids that these candidates are super awesome and it's inconceivable that a company wouldnt hire them. Maybe Ronan Sato is not such a hot candidate after all. Care to publish his resume, videos of him interviewing, and so on, so we can have further information before concluding that the Japanese were absolutely out of their minds to not just snap him up instantaneously without "requiring further interviews in Tokyo"? Are we supposed to be aghast at the fact that "further interviews in Tokyo" would have been required for a job offer?
How about writing an article about a particular individual who applied for a job on wall street and didnt get it. Say, a Chinese graduate of beijing university. We can then indict the entire corporate culture of the US and say "international people need not apply for jobs".

Tokyo's government officials will pay immigrants to get out of their country -- literally.

Passed in the spring of 2009, the "Nikkei" Law (Nikkei refers to a Latin American immigrant of Japanese descent) offers unemployed Latin American immigrants $3,000 to leave Japan and return to their home country, Foreign Policy reported. Their family members also get $2,000 for the relocation. There's just one catch: you only get the payment if you promise that you will never return to Japan to work. Not exactly the fairest trade we've ever heard

the country is still working off of its 1958 Migration Act, which mandates that non-citizens found to be in Australia without proper visas be detained. Furthermore, "unless they are granted permission to remain in Australia, they must be removed as soon as reasonably practicable," according to the country's Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

A report by Australia's Human Rights commission
found that the country's child refugees were abused and mistreated while in detention.

Much of this is an American cultural import, with US companies keen to instil in their staff a cultish sense of belonging, instead of the focus being on rights enjoyed by workers of previous generations. Corporate employee songs are a common way of whipping up loyalty (sample lyrics: “We built this Starbucks on Heart and Soul”; “blue box values are the best, I work for American Express” and “Oh happy day…When Ernst and Young showed me a better way…”) Walmart shelf stackers sing a daily devotional chant to their multi-billion dollar corporate employers, the same bosses that methodically discourage union membership. Microsoft boss, Steve Ballmer went viral on youtube with a perspiration-heavy display of corporate passion.

I see this whole article as a cleverly planned advertisement for his business aimed directly at native English speaking males with mediocre Japanese language skills and a very little time in Japan.

My advice: if you need professional counseling, find someone who at least has the balls to advertise out in the open rather than trying to hide behind a poorly written newspaper article.

Then, once Julian had been detained in Britain for seventeen months, she has continued to refuse to question him either at Scotland Yard, or the Swedish Embassy, and my son says the reason for this is that once he’s questioned, then they have to either let him go or charge him, and obviously they have no evidence to charge him. That’s why they’re not questioning him, and people who have studied this case believe it is nothing more than a holding case for a US extradition.
RT: Let’s now talk about the reaction to this in Canberra, In Australia his home country. Earlier Julian said he was abandoned by his own country, so what reaction would you like to have seen from Canberra at this point?

CA: Well unfortunately we have a puppet government in Australia, it’s run by the US, but I would have liked to have seen the Australian government stand up and have some independence from US foreign policy, and say “no, what you’re doing is persecuting a journalist who has not been charged with anything and under your own first amendment has done nothing wrong.” They didn’t stand up, they should have stood up. They should have protested vehemently to the UK government for its disgraceful display during the hearings.

No money for forced sterilization victims in NC

By MARTHA WAGGONER, Associated Press – 1 day ago
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ― The first serious proposal to compensate victims of forced sterilization failed Wednesday when North Carolina legislators said they were not approving any money for them. One ardent supporter declared: "At this point, I have lost all hope."
The effort to give each victim $50,000 passed the House, but the Senate never gave the measure consideration. Republican lawmakers in that chamber said the state didn't have the money in such a tight budget year to make up for misguided, decades-old procedures. Legislators also feared paying the victims would lead other groups, such as descendants of slaves, to seek reparations.
"If you could lay the issue to rest, it might be one thing. But I'm not so sure it would lay the issue at rest because if you start compensating people who have been 'victimized' by past history, I don't know where that would end," Republican Sen. Austin Allran said.
Most states had eugenics programs but abandoned those efforts after World War II when such practices became closely associated with Nazi Germany's attempts to achieve racial purity. Scientists also debunked the assumption that "defective" humans could be weeded out of the population.
North Carolina stood out because it actually ramped up its program after the war.
Between 1929 and 1974, North Carolina forcibly sterilized about 7,600 people whom the state deemed "feeble-minded" or otherwise undesirable. Many were poor black women.
A group set up to help North Carolina victims estimated up to 1,800 were still living, though it had only verified 146 people.

It’s been 19 years since Pam Hicks lost her son in a grim triple murder that is still talked about today. But in the latest episode of the infamous West Memphis Three case, Hicks is suing the police to see evidence they’ve kept from her since 1993.

Little Rock’s KTHV News reports that the state’s Rights of Victims of Crime Act reads that, in instances of crimes such as the one against Branch, "The responsible official shall promptly return the property to the victim when it is no longer needed for evidentiary purposes, unless it is contraband or subject to forfeiture."
Authorities argue that it’s just not possible, though. In Hicks’ last appeal to the City of West Memphis, officials responded that the same legislation is not applicable if evidence was “retained by a law enforcement agency following a conviction for a violent offense.”
“In accordance with A.C.A. §12-12-104(b), following any conviction for a violent offense, the physical evidence is required to be permanently impounded and securely retained by the law enforcement agency."

Deportee families face unfair attack

guardian.co.uk, Monday 18 June 2012 21.00 BST
Today, parliament will debate measures "to protect the public from foreign criminals who try to hide behind family life as a reason to stay here" (Report, 8 June). Such inflammatory rhetoric ignores the reality of the harm which can be caused when families are split by a parent's deportation. The Home Office has removed parents from the UK without making any proper checks as to the whereabouts and care arrangements of children who are left behind. These children may have been born and brought up in the UK, and are faced with unthinkable "choices". They can either leave behind family and friends in the UK to get on a plane to a country that they have never been to, or be separated from their parent for the rest of their childhood.

The poll by TrustLaw Women, the Foundation‟s women‟s rights news and information

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms includes provisions such as section 11(h) prohibiting double jeopardy. However, often, this prohibition applies only after the trial is finally concluded. Canadian law allows the prosecution to appeal from an acquittal. If the acquittal is thrown out, the new trial is not considered to be double jeopardy because the first trial and its judgment would have been annulled. In rare circumstances, a court of appeal might also substitute a conviction for an acquittal. This is not considered to be double jeopardy, either – in this case, the appeal and subsequent conviction are deemed to be a continuation of the original trial.

By proustienne

(WP:Smoke pours from Japan nuclear plant. By Associated Press, 2011/03/12 NYT: Snap analysis: Japan may have hours to prevent nuclear meltdown. By Scott DiSavino (Reuters), 2011/03/11)。

(A Look at the Mechanics of a Partial Meltdown.By Henry Fountain,2011/03/13)。

(Japanese Officials on Defensive as Nuclear Alert Level Rises. By Keith Bradsher, Hiroko Tabuchi and Andrew Pollak, 2011/04/12)。

(NYT:Japan Releases Low-Level Radioactive Water Into Ocean. By Hiroko Tabuchi and Ken Belson, 2011/04/04.,WP:Japan dumps radioactive water into ocean. By David Nakamura, 2011/04/05)。

(Cooling Problem Shuts Nuclear Reactor in Japan. By Hiroko Tabuchi. 2011/10/04)。

(WP:U.S. nuclear advocates try to limit political impact of Japan reactor crisis.By Dan Eggen, 2011/03/18., NYT:Lobbyists’ Long Effort to Revive Nuclear Industry Faces New Test . By Eric Lichtblau,2011/03/24., Former Hill Stars Add Muscle to Nuclear Industry's Post-Japan Lobbying. By Anne C. Mulkern, 2011/04/07.,etc.)。

(Nuclear energy after Fukushima. By Jim Hoagland, 2011/10/07., After Fukushima: Enough Is Enough. By Helen Caldicott, 2011/12/02.,etc.)。

By Laura Gitschier and Alexander Neubacher, 2011/9/15.,Is Berlin Still in the Nuclear Power Business? 2011/12/19.,Nuclear Lobby Pushes Ahead with New Reactors.By SPIEGEL Staff, 2012/03/08)。

(Japanese Tests Find Radiation in Infant Food. By Hiroko Tabuchi.2011/12/06)。

(Dearth of Candor From Japan’s Leadership. By Hiroko Tabuchi, Ken Belson and Norimitsu Onishi, 2011/03/16., Japan Held Nuclear Data, Leaving Evacuees in Peril. By Norimitsu Onishi and Martin Fackler, 2011/08/08)。

Deutche Welle,2012/04/19)。

Why Russian Liberals No Longer Look Up to America and the West as a Model

So, what’s wrong with the West? There is a consensus: failing economy, dysfunctional domestic political systems, entrenched interests, dwindling prosperity and populism. This naturally leads one to wonder, “What are the causes of the current Western malaise?” Fukuyama reminds us of Mancur Olson’s The Rise and Decline of Nations, in which the latter argued that, during prolonged periods of prosperity and peace, democratic countries tend to accumulate entrenched interest groups, which in turn leads to the ossification of political systems. If this diagnosis is correct, the problem is systemic, and the remedy is to update the basics.

Why Do Asian Americans Have the Worst Long-Term Unemployment? - The Atlantic http://bit.ly/JVjqej

The report's author offers up three explanations for the mystery. First, there's the California problem: About a third of all Asian Americans live in the Golden State, which has disproportionately high joblessness, both short term and long-term. Second, there's immigrant bias: Perhaps employers prefer to hire U.S.-born workers. Third, there's racial bias. If Asians had the same long-term unemployment as their equally-educated white peers, their long-term jobless rate would be 8.1 percentage points lower.

We have already gone straight into the issues. The conversation turns to the Japanese crisis of the 1990s. In retrospect, I suggest, the Japanese seem to have managed the aftermath of their crisis quite well.
He agrees. “What we thought was that Japan was a cautionary tale. It has turned into Japan as almost a role model. They never had as big a slump as we have had. They managed to have growing per capita income through most of what we call their ‘lost decade’.

This brings us back to the eurozone crisis. I remark that the Germans are now in a position of having to choose between permanently bailing out those they regard as deadbeats or breaking it up, causing an immense economic and political mess. I feel quite sorry for them.
