【北京共同】中国で母乳が闇で売買され、社会問題になっている。富裕層が「希少な栄養剤」として貧しい女性の母乳を飲用しており、短文投稿サイト「微博（ウェイボ）」では、道徳や人間性を失った格差社会のゆがみを批判する声が相次いでいる。
中国メディアによると、経済特区広東省深セン市の裕福な男性の間では、働き過ぎによる疲労からの回復や手術後の養生を目的に自分専用の「乳母」を自宅などで雇い「栄養補給」するのがはやっており、１カ月１万５千元（約２４万円）で雇った例もあるという。農村部の平均年収の約２倍に相当する高額報酬だ。

A spokesperson for the company who refused to be identified on Tuesday claimed the report was entirely false, insisting his company’s household services did not include recommending wet nurses. The allegations were malicious gossip aimed at driving his company out of business, he told the South China Morning Post by phone.
However, Xinxinyu Household Service Company’s advertisements can be seen on a number of marketing websites, promoting the high quality services of its wet nurses, as well as its nannies, stewards, confinement nurses and tutors. The advertisements state that the company’s wet nurses can provide services to adults in poor health. Photos online show wet nurses and staff with what appear to be company logos on the walls

Correll formed a video game-like experiment based on decades of “implicit associations” research. Participants had milliseconds to assess whether a person (or “target”) on the screen was carrying a gun. If the person had a gun, the participant had to quickly push a button to “shoot” the person. If the person had something else, like a wallet or a cell phone, participants had to press a different button. Time and again, research subjects wrongly shot the unarmed Black “targets.” And here is the kicker: Correll’s findings held even when the research subjects were Black. In other words, even Black people are more likely to shoot unarmed Black targets than armed white targets.
Over 2 million people have taken a similar test, the Implicit Associations Test. Participants have to push buttons identifying a face with a judgment, like “good” or “bad.” Almost 88 percent of the tens of thousands of white participants react to a Black face as “bad” and a white face as “good.” This is a subconscious preference for whites. And 42 percent of Blacks do as well.

Last July, federal officials announced that they would investigate old criminal cases to see if faulty testimonies influenced death penalty convictions. More than 21,700 FBI Laboratory files are being examined, and at least 120 convictions have already been identified as potentially suspicious. Of these, about 27 were death penalty convictions, the Post reports.

This is indeed the land of opportunity where children grow up being told what a "great job" they are doing and how they might all be president one day.
Which is all fine of course, except that for many, perhaps for most Americans, success never really comes.
For much of the half decade I have lived here, this country has been struggling economically.
All across the land, in previously well-off towns where half the high street has now closed down, you meet people fighting to make ends meet.

The U.S. v. Trayvon Martin: How the System Worked

The point is that justice was always going to elude Trayvon Martin, not because the system failed, but because it worked. Martin died and Zimmerman walked because our entire political and legal foundations were built on an ideology of settler colonialism -- an ideology in which the protection of white property rights was always sacrosanct; predators and threats to those privileges were almost always black, brown, and red; and where the very purpose of police power was to discipline, monitor, and contain populations rendered a threat to white property and privilege. This has been the legal standard for African Americans and other racialized groups in the U.S. long before ALEC or the NRA came into being.
And we will miss how this history of routine violence has become a central component of the U.S. drone warfare and targeted killing. What are signature strikes if not routine, justified killings of young men who might be al-Qaeda members or may one day commit acts of terrorism? It is little more than a form of high-tech racial profiling.

But if we are angry that Zimmerman’s non-prosecution is an effect of the Florida “stand your ground” laws allowing – indeed, encouraging – “justifiable homicides” on the basis of perceived threat, we should also be angry about another claim for justifiable homicides that also hides under legal cover: the US government’s targeted assassination program. In a speech to Northwestern University law student in early March, Eric Holder argued that the Obama administration has the authority to secretly target and kill U.S. citizens and non-citizens perceived to be threats without the target knowing s/he is a target, without the target being charged, without the target being given an opportunity to respond to the charges, and without any judicial oversight.
Our righteous indignation and anger over the Trayvon Martin murder has to stretch beyond our community to consider a global humanity – and especially the nonwhite victims of US militarism and racism.

Holder’s amazing anti-drone war speech
In powerfully decrying Stand Your Ground laws, the attorney general effectively rebuked current U.S. foreign policy

Institutional vigilantism is the kind of lawless behavior whereby the government extrajudicially executes a 16-year-old boy and ― separately ― his father, without citing a legal rationale or even so much as charging either of them with a single crime.
....
And yes, it is the kind of drone-war vigilantism that, as the Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates notes, “shares an ugly synergy with the broad-swath logic employed (by) the killer of Trayvon Martin.” Indeed, the New York Times points out that the administration justifies the drone killing of civilians on explicitly Zimmmerman-ish grounds, insisting that regardless of innocence, those extrajudicially executed by the government deserve their punishment because by virtue of being in a drone strike area, it means they “are probably up to no good.”

アメリカにおける、国内での拳銃による殺害事件、また米軍による、国外での武力による殺害事件というのは、臆病でマッチョな男が恐怖に駆られて、八つ当たり、乱射している、ようなイメージが私にはあるのであります。
それと、米軍による米軍内部における、性的暴行、搾取に憤慨するなら、アメリカのマスメディアは、国外で、米軍に性的暴行、搾取された、あるいは、されつつある女性たちに思いをはせ、同様に憤慨すべきでしょう。
在日ジャーナリストの多くがいまだに、占領軍の隊員か、植民地の植民のごとく傲慢な記事しか書けない現実をどうにかする必要があります。

曖昧な態度というより、不整合、矛盾した態度、といったもので、モルシの軍事クーデータに対しては、否定的だったがいざ、政権が変わると、多くの市民に支持されている、とか、内戦を食い止めた、などと肯定的な評価がアメリカ政府のなかから出ている、と。
軍事クーデーターをまっこうから否定するよりも、出現した政権が親米的ならそれ以上波風を立てる必要はないじゃないか、といったところなんじゃないですかね。

ブラック企業の定義はよくわかないのですが、これはアメリカ版ブラック企業といえるのかもしれない。
それは、ともかく、日本でも最低賃金を引き上げると企業はやっていけない、それよりも、安い賃金で雇用を増やしたほうがいい、という議論はあるわけですね。 企業がいなくなっちゃう、あるいは、駄目になったら元も子もないので、その議論は一理あるとは思いますが、しかし、最低賃金でフルタイムで働いて、つきなみの暮らしができないとすれば、やはり、その社会はおかしい、といわざる得ない。
問題はじゃあどうする、というところで、そこらへんの政策をもう少し詳しく知りたいところであります。

Wal-Mart’s promise to bring “everyday low prices” and jobs to cities across the nation comes at a high price. Studies show approximately 80 percent of Wal-Mart employees are forced to use food stamps and cost taxpayers an average of $1.02 billion in healthcare costs annually.
While Wal-Mart claims the hike in minimum wage would compromise its ability to create 1,200 D.C. jobs, its competitor Costco disproves the theory that corporations cannot pay livable wages and earn profits. Wal-Mart workers typically earn $8.81 per hour in contrast to the average Costco worker’s $21.96 an hour and most are eligible for benefits.

アメリカのマクドナルドが従業員用に家計簿プランのようなものを作ったみたいなんですが、
As Jim Cook at Irregular Times notes, the $1,105 figure up top is roughly what the average McDonald's cashier earning $7.72 an hour would take home each month after payroll taxes, if they worked 40 hours a week. So this budget applies to someone just about working two full-time jobs at normal fast-food pay. (The federal minimum wage is just $7.25 an hour, by the way, but 19 states and DC set theirs higher)
A few of the other ridiculous conceits here: This hypothetical worker doesn't pay a heating bill. I guess some utilities are included in their $600 a month rent? (At the end of 2012, average rent in the U.S. was $1,048). Gas and groceries are bundled into $27 a day spending money. And this individual apparently has access to $20 a month healthcare. McDonald's, for its part, charges employees $12.58 a week for the company's most basic health plan. Well, that's if they've been with the company for a year. Otherwise, it's $14.
Of course, minimum wage workers aren't really entirely on their own, especially if they have children. There are programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and the earned income tax credit to help them along. But that's sort of the point. When large companies make profits by paying their workers unlivable wages, we end up subsidizing their bottom lines.

Yet apparently The Market – our all-seeing, beneficent Market, which declares that it is right and just that some men should have billions, while others sleep under bridges – has decided that higher wages for the working poor are an offense against all that we hold sacred.

ぼくはそうは思わない。
やはり、中国のあの非民主的な体制には無理がある。
私は、アメリカのことを散々批判しますし、超強大な軍事力で他人を脅かしたり、自分に甘い二重基準で、高みから他人を説教する態度は大嫌いですけど、アメリカの懐の深さというか、自由と民主主義、それにともなう自己修正能力というのは、かなり評価しているのであります。
中国の相対的地位は上がるでしょうけど、アメリカの優位は当分続く。もっとも、そうした状況から、軍事的、経済的な多極化はある程度進行して、日本にとっても激動の時代が到来するかもしれない、とも思っています。

Forget the standard lunacy that emerging nations "hate our freedoms." They just don't want to be Westernized

まあ、ちょと面白い記事で、賛成するところもあれば反対するところもある。
アメリカは嫌われているのはなぜか、アメリカのようになりたくてなれないんで、アメリカが羨ましいんだ、という人がいる。そういった考えには 現代化する、というのは、西洋化する、という前提があり、進歩したければ、西洋風に進歩するものだ、という前提がある、と。だが、 ”進歩”や”現代”というのもは、西洋人の都合のいいように作られた観念なのだ、と。日本などは、西洋風に、現代化＝西洋化しようとした例であるが、それゆえに、現在の日本も混乱している、と。
問題は、
この現代化＝西洋化という戯言を前提としてしまっている西洋人があまりにも多く、また、エジプトやトルコなどのエリートも無批判にそうした考えに従ってしまっていることだ、と
だが、
現代化と西洋化ははっきり区別されるべきもので、自分たちの文化、伝統、歴史、価値などを継承しながら、つまり西洋化しないで、現代化することもできるのだ、と。アメリカのようになろうという国はもうないのだ、と。
ーーーここまではほぼ同意しますね。
日本のマスコミのインテリや、西洋人の大半の人は、、欧米風ではないと違っているだけでなく、遅れていると考え、時間が経てば、あるいは、西洋人、そして、西洋で教育を受けた現地のエリートの指導のもと、やがて西洋風になっていくはずだし、そうすべきだ、と思っている。いわゆる米ー欧中心主義的は発想が身にしみてしまっている。
しかし、現代化や、進歩はいろいろなあり方がありえるわけですね。欧米といっても、欧と米では異なる現代化の仕方をしているわけですし、欧のなかでも西欧と北欧はまた違った現代化をしている。それを均一的なものにしようというのは、全体主義的横暴でありますが、在日英米人のなかには、我こそが指導して、日本をアメリカ風、イギリス風にしてやる、といった使命感をもった人も多いのであります。
ただ、日本が欧米崇拝してきた傾向があるのは確かでし、いまでもその傾向は強いのですが、、単純に欧米風になろうとしたか、あるいは、欧米風になったかというと、そうではない。抵抗あり、摩擦ありの連続で、その中から、まさに、外来とのバランスの取れた融合を是とする大和魂で、西洋と日本の伝統の雑種的な日本を形成してきたわけです。そして、それは常に揺れ動いている。それをもって混乱というなら混乱だが、混乱や揺れがない文化などないのであります。
で、記事の筆者は、独自の現代化があっていい、ということから、現代エジプトで起きていることや、中国、その他で起きていることに対しても、独自の現代のあり方としてとらえようとしているのであります。
この点も、微妙なところで、いろんな文化や国家で、紆余曲折の進歩の仕方はあっていいし、結果として、例えば、アメリカ式民主主義のようになるとは限らないし、そうでないあり方があってもよいわけですが、じゃあ、エジプトの軍事クーデーターや、中国の人権弾圧を独自の現代化のあり方として正当化できるか、というとやはり、これは、できない。その文化、歴史の特殊性により、独自の価値の強調も許されるが、やはり、それも、普遍的価値に反しない範囲での独自性の展開ということになるのだろう、というのが私見です。

Have you ever wondered why so many non-Western people harbor such visceral dislike of Western nations, and almost always the United States more than any other? The standard answer, never more clearly articulated than after the Sept. 11 attacks, is that these people envy us. “They hate our freedoms,” George W. Bush advised. “They want our stuff,” a columnist wrote (only half in jest, sadly). They aspire to be “just like us,” as an older formulation has it.
Utterances such as these are versions of what the scholars used to call “modernization theory,” an ideological swamp it is best not to wade far into. The thesis is that to modernize one must Westernize. If you want to progress, you have to progress the way we Westerners progressed, because we invented “progress” and “the modern” and other such things.
Modernization theory was a Cold War construct, and it held for a time. Postwar Japan is a noted example, which is why Japan today is so wrenchingly confused as to what it is and what it is supposed to do. Some of Europe’s former colonies, achieving independence in the Cold War decades, tried it on, too ― usually to no brilliant result.

Two problems now linger. One is that too many Westerners, especially those who determine foreign policies, still accept this rubbish as a given. The other is that Westernized elites in emerging countries ― Egypt and Turkey are glow-in-the-dark examples, but there are numerous others ― buy into the same thinking, and so are unwilling to accept the aspirations of their own majorities.

Here is the rub, the task, the thing that needs to be grasped: Modernization has to be separated from Westernization if it is going to occur constructively from here on out. Making the two equivalent is a 500-year-old habit among Westerners, begun when Vasco da Gama landed in India in 1498. My candidate for the greatest distinction of our time is that people will be able to become modern while keeping their own cultures, traditions, histories, values and so on.
