ウクレレが生んだ出会い・・・ One ukulele made an encounter....

このすばらしい木目のは1920年代前半のマーチン社製のウクレレで、Wurlitzer という楽器やジュークボックスの会社にOEMで供給した珍品です。
This beautiful ukulele with figured flame Koa wood was supplied specially for the Wurlitzer Company by C.F.Martin in early 1920's and it's pretty rare to find.


アメリカのインターネットオークションで手に入れたのですが、なんとカスタムギターを作る著名な職人さんからの出品でした。アイダホでSalmon River Guitarsを主宰するギター職人のStephen Nealというギタービルダーだったのです。
I actually got the Uke in eBay put there by famous guitar luthier, Stephen Neal of Salmon River Guitars in Idaho,USA.


取引の間にいろいろ話をしていてわかったのですが、彼の息子さんが、日本にいるからなにかあったらそちらにいってくれとのことでした。その息子さんがなんか日本で俳優のような仕事をしているからサイト見てと言われ、調べたらなんと「ダーリンは外国人」に出演するジョナサン・シアだったのです。たまたま私が渡米する直前でステファンは親切にも特急で送ってくれ、無事、出発までに間に合いました。もちろんウクレレもすばらしいモノでした。
During the auction we were in touch with email and Stephen told me his son was in Japan and if there would be any trouble he would be able to help me. And I found out his son was Jonathan Sherr who will take part in a movie called "My Darling is a foreigner"... It was just before I took a trip to USA Stephen kindly made a haste shipping for me and it safely arrived here in time before I leave for USA. Of course the uke is great as he described.

ステファンの作るギターはSAQUI GUITAR といいます。ジョナサンが持参して見せてくれたギターはステファンが特別に作った息子のためのギターです。すばらしいですよね！息子のために心を込めてギターを贈るなんて！一生の宝ですよね。
The Guitar built by Stephen is called "SAQUI GUITAR".　Jonathan brought and show me his guitar specially built by his father. It's soooo marvelous to build up the guitar for the son - Jonathan's treasure of life !


実にすばらしいギターで、作りもとても上質で材料もいいスプルース、マホガニーなどが使われています。
ボディには特にワシントン条約で制限されているなブラジリアンローズウッドを使用しています。材料だけでなくすばらしい造りでとても引きやすい優れたモノです。ウェブで見れますが、造るのが難しいアーチトップのギターもすばらしい美しさです。彼は長年、ギターのリペアを専門にしてきて、ギターの総てを知っています。それでこうした良いギターをつくれるのですね。
I was impressed with its high quality, building up with good material of spruce and mahogany. It is particularly worth noting that he use Brazilian Rosewood for the body. Brazilian Rosewood was very touch to get in hand because since early 90's it has been protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
Of course it has not only great materials but great quality in assenbling and great playability. He can also make the beautiful arched top guitar as you can see in his website. -Highly professional skill is needed for making up the arched top guitar. I heard he has been taking guitar repairing for a long time and is now authorized warranty repair guy for C.F Martin. I guess his wide experience made him a great guitar builder. Jonathan's guitar says he knows everything about the guitar.

ジョナサンと軽くセッションをしましたが、私の古いマーチンに引けを取らないすばらしい音です。
I enjoyed a short session with Jonathan and his guitar sound was so nice as my old Martin.



ジョナサンもお父さんにまけないようなすばらしい俳優さんになるよう応援したいです。
I hope Jonathan would be a much greater actor in the near future after working hard as well as his father got a great luthier.
