Empress TA Thien
Among the empresses whose deaths left great sorrows foe the royal dynasty of Nguyen was Lady Ho Thi Hoa, the first wife of Rmperor Ming Mang when he was only a prince in evacuation. Born in 1791, the year of pigs, Lady Hoa was at the same age with her husband, Emperor Minh Mang.
As a daughter of Duke Phuc Quac Ho Van Boi from Binh An district, Bien Hoa, in 1806, according to Dai Nam Chronicles, she was chosen among the mandarins' daughters to be in service of Prince Nguyen Phuc Dam out of her four features of divinity, carefulness, tenderness and virtuosity. At the palace she was nourished by Queen Thua Thien and Queen Thuan Thien as well as Emperor Gia Long. King Nguyen Anh dedicated to her the name of That with comments "Prince Dam's lady is called Hoa (Flower) because of the meanings comprised in words For florishing scent. Now, renamed That, the significance is greater because of the inclusion of both flowers and fruits".

Lady Ngo Thi Chinh
Emperor Minh Manh had besides his three concubines, Than Phi (Devine Lady) the mother of Emperor Thieu Tri, Lady Ngo Thi Chinh and lady Pham Thi Tuyet, many other ladies of different rows and ranks. Both Than Phi and Gia Phi died early, only Hien Phi lived longer together with the Emperor. Most favored by Emperor Minh Mang, Lady Ngo Thi Chinh was the daughter of Chancellor Ngo Van So from Dang Xuong district,Quang Tri province.

Empress Nam Phuong
Empress Nam Phuong was the last sovereign of the Nguyen Dynasty. She was the only lady who became the empress right after her wedding, other empresses of earlier monarchs were not often dedicated during their lifetime.
Regulations and ritual laws since Emperor Minh Manh included four articles prohibition, now-supervision from the empress, non-executive for the crown prince, non-premiership, and non-doctorate of highest rank. But,there was an exception for Lady Nguyen Thi Lan at the start of her court life. Emperor Bao Dai embarrassed the celebrities and the Royal Court by his forceful requiry of a marriage twith her. The monarch was pleased with his Catholic wife owing much to the French influences.

Empress Nam Phuong was baptized as Mariette Jean and her other name was Nguyen Thi Lan. She was born in 1914, the year of tigers, into the family of Duke Long My Nguyen Huu Hao, a rich farmer in Cochin-china. Her personalities were pleasant and genetous though coming from the most influential family of Nam Ki. In 1927, she went overseas to France and attended the Couvent des Oisseaux in Paris with a baccalaureate after graduation. Crown Prince Vinh Thuy started his formal schooling also in France as permited by his father, Emperor Khai Dinh, according to some suggestions from the French, who entrusted the prince to Annam Envoy Charles before his return to France.

After Emperor Khai Dinh's death in 1925. the crown prince returned home for the funeral of his fater and for the coronation celebration. He came back to France for a continuity of his study. In 1932, the Charles' accompanied Bao Dai to Vietnam on the same ship with Lady Lan, Mr Hao's daughrter. Their meeting was not casual, but in some intention by the French who prefered a Catholic of French nationality.
