Japan’s export slump slowed in March, ending a four-month streak of record drops and adding to signs the recession may have started to ease.

3月は日本の輸出低迷が減速し、4ヶ月間続いた史上最悪の落ち込みは終焉を向かえ、不況が和らぎ始めたかもしれないとの兆しを加えた。

Overseas shipments slumped 45.6pc from a year earlier, compared with February’s unprecedented 49.4pc plunge, the Finance Ministry said today in Tokyo. Economists predicted a 46.4pc drop.

2月の海外への輸出は史上最悪の前年比-49.4%だったが、3月は-45.6%だった、と財務省が本日伝えた。
エコノミストは-46.4%の落ち込みと予測していた。

The drop in shipments to the US and China, Japan’s two largest markets, slowed.

日本の二大市場である米国、中国への出荷の減少が減速したのだ。

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said last week the “sharp decline” in the US may be slowing. Goldman Sachs today raised its economic growth forecast for China to 8.3pc this year from 6pc previously, citing Premier Wen Jiabao’s 4 trillion yuan (£400bn) stimulus package.

ゴールドマン・サックスは本日、温家宝首相の4兆人民元（4,000億ポンド）相当の経済刺激策を取り上げて、中国の今年の予想経済成長率を6%から8.3%に上方修正した。

“It would be premature to celebrate,” said David Cohen, director of Asian economic forecasting at Action Economics in Singapore. “There’s no denying the Japanese economy is in its most severe recession since WWII, but at least it’s not spiraling down any more.”

「喜ぶのは未だ早い」とシンガポールのアクション・エコノミクスでアジア経済予想を担当するデイヴィッド・コーエン・ディレクターは言った。
「日本経済が第二次世界大戦以来最悪の不況に見舞われている、ということは否定出来ない事実だ。だが少なくとも、もう下方スパイラルに陥っているわけではない」。

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average closed up 0.18pc at 8727.3.

日経225は0.18%上がって8723.3となった。

Shipments to China sank 31.5pc in March compared with a year earlier, after falling 39.7pc in the previous month.

中国への出荷は2月に39.7%減少した後、3月は前年比31.5%落ち込んだ。

Exports to the US fell 51.4pc after dropping 58.4pc in February. On a seasonally adjusted basis, exports rose 2.2pc from February, the first increase since May.

対米輸出は2月に58.4%減少した後、51.4%の落ち込みを記録した。
季節調整後では、輸出は2月に比べて2.2%増加したが、これは昨年5月以来初めての増加だ。
