Italy's political crisis was in flux on Saturday night as its president delayed the appointment of the country's new prime minister.

After a day of frantic meetings following Friday's resignation by Enrico Letta, forced out by his own party, Mr Napolitano disappointed supporters of Matteo Renzi, the mayor of Florence, who hoped he would have been appointed immediately.

自分の政党から追い出されたエンリコ・レッタ伊首相の金曜日の辞任を受けた緊急会議の翌日、大統領はフィレンツェ知事、即時任命を期待していたマッテオ・レンツィ氏の支持者をがっかりさせました。

Mr Renzi, 39, was behind the internal party coup that forced Mr Letta from office on Friday.

Mr Napolitano held consultations with a number of political leaders, including Silvio Berlusconi, the disgraced former prime minister and leader of the Forza Italia party, to try to resolve the leadership vacuum and "deliver an effective solution to the crisis".

But he did not make clear that he would name Mr Renzi as the new premier or indicate when an announcement would be made. He said only that the talks had been completed "at maximum speed" in just over a day in order to give the next prime minister more "time and tranquility" to prepare his agenda and select his team.

しかし発表の時間になっても、新首相としてレンツィ氏を名指しするか提示するか、大統領は明らかにしませんでした。
ただ、次期首相に政策課題を準備し組閣する「時間と平穏」をもっと与えるために、僅か一日という「最速で」協議を終わらせたとだけ発言しました。

"These consultations have had an intense pace and have had not been formal or structured," Mr Napolitano said.

Mr Berlusconi , who was banned from political office and thrown out of the Senate after his tax fraud conviction was upheld last year, led a delegation from his centre-right party. As he emerged he pledged to act as a "responsible opposition" and maintain his commitment to electoral reform.

昨年、脱税容疑で有罪判決を受けて公職を追放され上院議員の議席も失ったベルルスコーニ前首相は、自らの中道右派政党の派遣団の代表を務めました。

Mr Renzi was elected secretary of the Democratic Party in a landslide last December and is now poised to become the third unelected prime minister to lead the country in less than three years. Nicknamed the "Rottamatore" or demolition man for his desire to shake up the political system, he has already begun talks with the centre-Right on forming a cabinet.

Mr Renzi remained in Florence and briefly greeted the media with a "Hi guys, I'll see you later" as he arrived by car at the 14th century town hall, Palazzo Vecchio.

The brash political leader has called for urgent electoral and economic reforms that are likely to include tax cuts and job creation incentives, particularly for young people, in a country mired in recession. Youth unemployment peaked at 41.6 per cent last month.

On Saturday Mr Alfano demanded more clarity and less urgency after meeting the president and warned he would not work with a Renzi government if it moved further to the Left..

"A fundamental element will be the composition of the coalition. If it moves further to the left we will say no," Mr Alfano told the media.

The Florence mayor, nicknamed "Caesar" by more than one commentator for his revolutionary approach, has plenty of critics particularly on the Left.

"With his formidable political advance, Matteo Renzi has squandered his entire stock of credibility, hope and consensus," said Nichi Vendola, who heads the small Left Ecology Freedom party (SEL), on Saturday.

The ambitious Mr Renzi provoked the latest political upheaval at an emergency party meeting in Rome on Thursday, accusing Mr Letta failing to pull the country out of the "quagmire" and calling for a "new phase" of government.

"Italy cannot live in a situation of uncertainty and instability. We are at a crossroads," Renzi told the members of the party's leadership committee who overwhelmingly endorsed Mr Renzi and effectively forced the prime minister to go.

"It was a minority that unleashed this internal cannibalism," said Eleonora Cimbro, a 35-year-old MP who attended the meeting.

Ms Cimbro said members of his Democratic Party were infuriated by what she called " a palace coup" and warned Mr Renzi's tenure could be short-lived.

Mr Letta was appointed prime minister 10 months ago to resolve the political stalemate after inconclusive elections in February 2013. The Democratic Party has a majority in the lower house of Parliament but relies on smaller parties in the Senate.
