Russia has honoured a British double agent reviled in Britain as a traitor in a special ceremony on the former spy’s 85th birthday.
ロシアはこの元スパイの85歳の誕生日を祝う特別式典で、イギリスでは裏切り者として罵倒されているイギリス人二重スパイを賞賛した。
George Blake, who turned 85 on Sunday, was a British secret agent from 1944 until 1961, when he was jailed for 42 years after pleading guilty to spying for the Soviet Union.
日曜日に85歳となったジョージ・ブレイクは、1944-1961年までイギリス諜報員だった。
1961年、彼はソ連のスパイ容疑を認めた後、42年間投獄された。
He escaped from prison in London in 1966 and has lived in Moscow since.
1966年、彼はロンドンの刑務所を脱走し、以来モスクワで生活している。
He told Reuters he had lived a ‘full and happy life’.
ロイター通信に対し、彼は「満足で幸せな人生」を生きてきたと語った。
Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence service, successor to the mighty First Chief Directorate of the Soviet KGB secret police, feted Blake at a special gala at its headquarters on Monday evening, the SVR said.
ロシアのSVR対外諜報部（ソ連のKGB秘密警察の強力な第一総局の後継機関）は月曜日の夜、本部で開催したスペシャル・ガーラでブレイクに敬意を表した、とSVRは述べた。
SVR director Mikhail Fradkov decorated Blake with the Friendship Order and read out telegrams from Russia’s leadership, Interfax news agency quoted SVR spokesman Sergei Ivanov as saying.
SVR局長のミハイル・フラトコフは、ブレイクに友好勲章を授与し、ロシア首脳陣からの電報を読み上げた、とインターファクス通信はSVR報道官セルゲイ・イワノフの言葉を引用した。
“The importance of the information supplied by Blake can hardly be overestimated,” Ivanov said.
「ブレイクによって供給された情報の重要性は、とても過大評価出来ない」
とイワノフは述べた。
The ceremony is the latest indication of deteriorating relations between Britain and Russia after Moscow refused a request to extradite the chief suspect in the killing of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko in London a year ago.
この式典は、一年前にロンドンで起こった、元ロシア人工作員アレクサンダー・リトヴィネンコ殺害における第一容疑者を引き渡すように、との要請をロシア政府が拒絶した後の、英露関係悪化の最新の兆しだ。
Russia has refused to extradite Andrei Lugovoi, a former KGB officer, to face trial for Mr Litvinenko’s murder.
ロシアはアンドレイ・ルゴヴォイ元KGBを、リトヴィネンコ氏の殺害容疑での裁判のために引き渡すことを拒絶した。
In 1953 Blake tipped off the Soviet intelligence of plans by British and US secret services to build a tunnel into the Soviet-occupied zone of Berlin to tap into landline communication of the Soviet Army headquarters.
ブレイクは1953年、ソ連軍本部の有線通信を傍受すべく、ベルリンのソ連占領地区へ繋がるトンネルを建設する、というイギリスとアメリカの諜報部による計画について、ソ連情報部に情報提供した。
The Soviets unearthed the tunnel in 1956 after it had been in operation for almost a year.
1956年、ほぼ一年間この作戦が実施された後で、ソ連はこのトンネルを暴いた。
But only after Blake’s arrest in 1961 did Western intelligence officials realise Moscow had used its knowledge of the tunnel to misinform them.
しかし1961年のブレイクの逮捕後まで、誤解させるためにロシア政府がこのトンネルの知識を利用していた、ということを西側情報当局は知らなかった。
“It is namely thanks to Blake that the Soviet Union avoided very serious military and political damage which the United States and Great Britain could have inflicted on it, should they have succeeded in such a large-scale operation now widely known as ‘The Berlin Tunnel’,” SVR’s Ivanov said.
「現在では『ベルリン・トンネル』として広く知られる大規模オペレーションにおいて、アメリカとイギリスが成功していれば及ぼしたと思われる、非常に深刻な軍事的かつ政治的損害をソ連が避けられたことについて、心からブレイクに感謝する」
とSVRのイワノフは言った。
“I never realised that,” Blake told Reuters by telephone, commenting on the SVR’s praise.
ブレイクはSVRからの賞賛についてコメントし「一度も知らなかった」とロイター通信に電話で語った。
“But it’s very difficult to see things like that (the Berlin tunnel) in the general picture.”
「けれどそのように物事（ベルリン・トンネル）を全体的な絵の中において考えるのは非常に困難だった」。
Asked whether attitude to him in present-day capitalist Russia run by former KGB spy Vladimir Putin was any different than in Soviet times, he said: “Oh no, no, not in the least.”
元KGBスパイであるウラジミール・プーチンが支配する、現在の資本主義ロシアで彼に対する態度はソ連時代と異なるか、と訊ねられると彼は「いや全然、全然、ちっとも変わっていない」と答えた。
Blake had admitted handing the Soviet Union hundreds of names of British agents.
ブレイクは数百名のイギリス人スパイの名前をソ連に渡したことを自白した。
He left three children behind in Britain when he escaped from jail more than four decades ago and started a new family in Moscow.
40年以上も前に脱走した時、イギリスには3人の子ども達を残し、モスクワで新しい家庭を築いた。
“I feel very lucky to have lived to my age and to be in good health, and to have had a very interesting and very full and, in the end, a happy life,” he told Reuters.
「この歳まで生きてきて、健康でいられて、とても幸運だと感じている。それに非常に面白く、非常に充実した、そして最終的には幸せな人生を送られて…」
と彼はロイター通信に語った。
