European politicans plead with Britons to vote "yes" and keep the union intact
ヨーロッパの政治家が「YES」に投票して！EUを残して！と英国人に訴え。
Europe's leaders have issued a passionate plea for Britain to remain in the European Union, fearing that Brexit could set off a disastrous chain of events at a time of existential crisis for the EU project.
欧州首脳陣が英国よ、EUに残留してくれ！と情熱的に訴えました。
ブレギジットがEUプロジェクト存亡の危機に破滅の連鎖反応を引き起こすんじゃあないかと心配なんですね。
Manuel Valls, the French prime minister, said the whole of European civilisation is under grave threat and the region must stick together in its own self-defence, warning that the departure of the UK would be a fatal blow. "It would be a tragedy," he said.
フランスのマニュエル・ヴァルス首相は、ヨーロッパの文明は甚大なる脅威に脅かされておる！ヨーロッパは自衛のために一致団結せねばならん！として、英国の離脱はとどめの一撃になっちゃうぞとワーニング。

Mr Valls warned that the European system is alarmingly fragile. "Europe could lose its historical footing and the project could die quickly. Things could fall apart within months," he told the World Economic Forum in Davos.
ヴァルス首相はヨーロピアン・システムはおっそろしいほど脆いと警告。
「ヨーロッパは歴史的足場をなくして、プロジェクトもさっさと逝くかもしらん。数ヶ月も経たずにばっらばらかも」とダボス会議でご発言です。
"We are involved in a world war against terrorism. We're going to have to live with this threat for years," he said, insisting that Europe must go on the offensive to defeat ISIS and jihadi forces in Libya, the African Sahel, and Syria.
「僕らは世界的な対テロ戦争に絡んでんだからね。何年も何年もこの脅威と一緒に生きなきゃいけないんだから」として、ヨーロッパはリビアとアフリカ・サヘルとシリアにいるISISとジハード勢力を叩き続けなきゃいけないんだと強く主張されました。
Wolfgang Schauble, German finance minister, implored the British people to vote yes to Europe in this year's referendum. "It would be a disaster otherwise," he said.
ヴォルフガング・ショイブレ独財務相は、英国人に今年の国民投票ではヨーロッパにYESの票を投じておくれと嘆願。
「さもなけりゃ大惨事だよ」とのこと。
Political leaders in Berlin are deeply concerned that British withdrawal could change the balance of power and the internal chemistry of the EU, leaving Germany with an unwelcome hegemony that would strain the Franco-German partnership to breaking point.
英国が離脱したらパワー・バランスもEUの内部ケミストリーも変わっちゃって、ドイツはありがたくもない、仏独パートナーシップを限界まで引っ張る覇権を押し付けられちゃうんじゃないか、なんてドイツ政府首脳陣はむちゃくちゃ心配しています。
Mr Schauble has warned in the past that if the EU is unable to stop one of its more prosperous members from walking out in frustration, hard-headed investors in Asia, the US, and around the world, will take it as evidence that the EU is in terminal decline.

Separately, Mr Schauble gave a strong hint that there can be no bail-out funding for Greece unless the International Monetary Fund agrees to take part. The IMF has refused to do so until there is debt relief on a sufficient scale to clear the way for recovery.

Mr Schauble said the German Bundestag has stipulated that any new money is contingent on IMF participation, and it would dangerous to reopen this tortured issue. "It would be like walking into a room full of dynamite carrying a lighted candle," he said.
大臣曰く、ドイツ議会はIMFが仲間になんなきゃこれ以上はびた一文も出さないぞと言ってるそうで、この古傷をまたぱっくり開けるのは危険ってもので。
「火のついた蝋燭持ってダイナマイトがみっしり詰まった部屋に行くようなもんだ」とか。
The Irish Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, played down earlier suggestions that Dublin is losing patience with Britain and will no longer try to keep the country in the EU "at any cost". He insisted in Davos that preventing Brexit is a strategic priority of the first order for Ireland.
アイルランドのエンダ・ケニー首相は、うちの政府は英国にもう我慢なんねーんだ、これ以上「なにがなんでも」EUに残留させようなんてがんばんねーからな！という先の発言をトーンダウン。
ダボス会議じゃ、ブレギジット阻止はアイルランドにとって戦略的最優先事項だ、と強くご主張されました。
"Ireland supports very strongly the fact that Britain should remain a central player in the European Union. The Union would be weaker without Britain. And obviously it would have implications for Ireland were Britain to leave," he said.
「アイルランドは英国がEUのキープレーヤーであり続けるべきってことに大賛成だ。英国抜きじゃEUは今より弱くなるからね。それにはっきりしてるだろ、英国が離脱したらアイルランドにだって影響があるって」
Mr Kenny warned earlier this month that Brexit could lead to the nightmare of border controls between the Republic and Ulster, while a report by Dublin's leading economic think tank (ESRI) said the economic fall-out from British withdrawal would be disastrous for Ireland. Security officials are worried that Brexit could disturb the Irish peace settlement, and even lead to the reactivation of terrorist cells.

Mark Rutte, the Dutch premier and current president of the European Council, said Britain brings an "outward looking" view of the world and is a driving force for competitiveness. "These are values Europe needs," he said.
欧州理事会の議長を務めるマルク・ルッテ蘭首相は、英国は世界の「外向きな」見解をもたらす、競争力の推進力だ、とか言ってますね。
「これはヨーロッパに必要な価値なんだよ」とのこと。
Mr Rutte sought to soothe fears that the EU is trying to dictate terms to the UK or that it is deaf to justifiable British concerns. "David Cameron has a lot of credibility and influence. I am fairly optimistic we will get to a positive outcome in February," he said.

In truth, the Brexit dispute is viewed as a deeply-irritating distraction at a moment when Europe is already grappling with multiple crises. Mr Rutte said the Schengen system could disintegrate very fast as fresh waves of refugees from the Middle East flood into Europe. "We need to get a grip on this issue in the next six to eight weeks," he said.

Over 35,000 migrants crossed into the EU in the first three weeks of January, and this is expected to surge once the spring thaw arrives. "Numbers will quadruple. We can't cope with these numbers any longer," he said, warning that there must be an end to the open-door policy, and a return to the Dublin regulation where refugees are held in the first country of entry.

This prompted an immediate retort from Greek premier Alexis Tsipras, sitting on the same panel, whose country has become the main migrant route from Turkey. "This can't be an a la carte union. All European countries must share the burden," he said.

Mr Tsipras said it is a terrible political failing that Greece and Turkey each have powerful military forces constantly testing each other in "dog-fights over the Aegean" yet they cannot control the deadly smuggling of migrants to the Greek islands. "What is happening is a disgrace for our civilisation", he said.
