Russia opens Afghanistan supply route for US

The United States will be allowed to transport supplies to its troops in Afghanistan through Russian territory in the first sign of a thawing of relations.
最初の関係改善の兆しの中、アメリカはアフガニスタンにいる米軍への、ロシア領土経由での物資輸送を許可されるだろう。
The deal, seen as vital to the success of America's military aims in Afghanistan, is the first sign of a softening in Russian attitudes towards the West since last August's war in Georgia.
米軍のアフガニスタンでの目標達成にとって重要と考えられている協定は、昨年8月のグルジア戦争以来、初めてロシアの対西側姿勢が和らいだという兆しだ。
Furious over Washington's support for Georgia during the five-day conflict, Russia had threatened to scupper the accord, which had been provisionally agreed during a Nato summit in April.
アメリカ政府が5日間の戦争中、グルジアを支援したことに激怒して、ロシアは4月のNATOサミットで仮合意されていた協定を破棄すると脅していた。
Russia suspended all military co-operation with Nato as relations with the West soured.

But Gen David Petraeus, the commander of US forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, said that a deal had now finally been signed.
しかしアフガニスタン・イラク駐留米軍司令官のデイヴィッド・ペトレイアス将軍は、もう協定は最終的に締結されていると語った。
Under the agreement, the United States will be allowed to ship "non-lethal" supplies through a northern corridor from Russia to Afghanistan via Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
この協定の下でアメリカは、ロシアからカザフスタンとウズベキスタンを経由してアフガニスタンへ向かう北部経路を通って、「非殺人用」物資の輸送を許可される。
The deal will ease dependence on a perilous resupply route from the Pakistani port of Karachi that has come under frequent attack by Islamic fighters.

It will also give Washington greater diplomatic leverage over the Pakistani government which has been accused of taking advantage of US dependence on its transit route by failing to tackle home-grown terrorism.

Despite the concession, a return to warm relations between Moscow and Washington seems unlikely. Earlier this month, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, called on the United States to "acknowledge the reality of a post-American world."
